Understanding Science and Engineering Concepts

Science is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. It involves gathering knowledge through various means like necessity, curiosity, and investigation to develop reliable theories that can be verified through experiments and peer review. The main branches of science are natural science, which studies natural phenomena, and social science, which studies relationships within societies. Science informs and is informed by technology and depends on engineering to apply scientific knowledge for practical solutions.

 Science comes from German word “Wissenshaft”

meaning systemized and organized knowledge.

 Word “Scire” means to know.
 Word ”Scientia” means knowledge.
 It means thinking in an organized and systemized
way
 Science is “method of investigating nature and
universe that discovers reliable knowledge about it”.
 “The intellectual and practical activity
encompassing the systematic activity of the
structure and behavior of the physical world
through observation and experiment”.

Types
 Pure Science:
 It includes Basic science such as Physics,
Chemistry and Maths.
It deals with theories of science and predictions
about nature.
It deals more with laboratories.

 Applied Science:
It is the discipline of science that utilizes
scientific information to develop practical
solutions.
It deals with engineering and technology.
It is a practical approach towards pure science.

 Natural Science:
Natural science is a branch of science concerned
with the description, prediction, and
understanding of natural phenomena, based on
empirical evidence from observation and
experimentation. Mechanisms such as peer review
and repeatability of findings are used to try to
ensure the validity of scientific advances.

 Social Science:
Social science is the branch of science devoted to
the study of societies and the relationships among
individuals within those societies. The term was
formerly used to refer to the field of sociology.

How science developed

Science developed through
 Our necessity.
 Curiosity.
 Observation.
 Investigation (surrounding knowledge).
 Data Collection (Development of new ideas).

Science/Technology
Dependence:
 Science depends on WHY, WHAT, HOW
Steps of scientific development:
 Strat from literature
 Assumptions
 Experiments, research works
 Verifications/Characterization
 Conclusion

Knowledge
 Education Based

 Culture Based
 Personal Based
 Science Based

Engineering
Definition:
It is a profession in which knowledge of math and
natural science, gained by study, experience and
practice is applied with judgement to develop ways
to use, economically, materials and force of nature
for benefit of mankind.

Explanation:
 It is interdisciplinary technology based on pure
science than applied science.
 Steps involved are: Designing, process and
manufacturing.
 Technology is outcome of engineering.
 Successful engineering design improves quality
of life while working within technical, economic,
societal & ethical constraints.
 Ingeniere (Latin) meaning to design or to
devise.

Level of Thoughts
 Gathering knowledge consists of acquiring
basic pieces of information.
 Comprehending and confirming involves looking
at the meaning of the knowledge that has been
gathered and drawing conclusions from it.
 Applying entails using what has been learned in
new situations.
 Analyzing involves thinking about a whole in
terms of its various parts.
 Synthesizing consists of putting parts
together to form a whole.
 Evaluating entails making comparisons and
judgments.
