BRITISH STANDARD SPECIFICATLON FOR

STEEL COLUMNS ' FOR STREET LIGHTING
Fomwom
The first edition of this standard, published in 1952, covered only steel street
lighting columns made from tubes to B.S. 1775. In the present revision, the
scope has been extended to cover columns made from other forms of steel and
by other methods OP construction.
Although columns made to this standard may be of any length, attention
is drawn to the recoininendationsof British Standard Code of Practice CP 1004,
' Street lighting ': Parts 1 and 2, dealing with the design of lighting installations
in trafic routes (Group A) and in roads other than fraílìc routes (Group B)
and, in particular, to the recommendations for mounting height.
NOTE. Where metric equivalents ate stated, the figures in British units are to be regarded
as the standard. The nietric conversions are approximate. More accurate conversions should
be based on the tables in ES. 350, ' Conversion factors and tables '.

SPECIFICATION
SCOPE
1. This British Standard specSes requirements for the materials and design of
steel street lighting columns with or without bracket arms.
The columns specified in this standard are not intended to support overhead
wiring, and attention is drawn to the design loading shown in Clause 17.

2. For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply:
a. Mourtfirgheiglt, The vertical distance from the centre of the light source
to the carriageway, or to the horizontal plane through the nearest point of the
carriageway when the light source is not vertically above it.
6. Orifreach. The shortest distance between the vertical line through the
centre of the base of the column, and the vertical line through the centre of the
tight source.
MATERIAL
3. The columns shall be manufactured from:
I'
a. Steel tubes conformingto B.S. 1775, 'Stcel tubes for mechanica1,structural
and general engineering purposes', Grades 13, 1.6 or 20.
D. Steel plate, slieet or strip coiûoriiUiig to B.S, 1449, 'Steel plate, slieet
aiid strip', Part 1, Matetial HR 37/23 or Material HR 43/25 or Material CR
37/23 or Material HS 43/25 or Material CS 17 or Material CS 22.'

1 or 2, Grade 50C.?
CONSTRUCXTON

4. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the method of construction

shall be decided by the manufacturer.
Where welded construction is used the manufacturer shaU comply with the
requirements of whichever of the following is appropriate:
B.S. 938. General requirements for the metal-arc welding of weldable
structural steel tubes.
B.S. 1856. General requirements for the metal-arc welding of mild steel,
B.S.2937, General requiremcnts for seam welding in mild steel.
Where other mcthods of construction are used, the joints shall be satis-
factorily weatherproofed, and protected against corrosion.
When the columns are manufactured in sections, these sections may be
asscmbled on site,
TOLERANCES

5. a. Diameter. Except at joints, steps and door openings, the tolerance on the
outside diameter of columns of circular cross-section (over the fliites,.if fluted)
aiid on the diameter of the cikle inscribing the outer surfaces of other cross-
sections is & 1.5 per cent of the diameter.
b. T)[Link] tolerance on the thickness of thematerial is rt 15 per cent
of the thickness.
c. Straightness. That part of the column above the ground shall not deviate
from straightness by more than an amount calculated at a rate of 940th of an
inch per ft (2.1 mrn per metre) of column length.
DOORS AND DOOR OPENINGS
6. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, a weatherproof door provided
with a locking device shall be included in the base of the column, and the
bottom of the door shall not be less than 12 in (305 mm) above the ground.

Unless the door opening is reinforced insine, its corners shall be rounded to a
radius of approximately % in (12.7 mm).
It is recommended that the tollowing sizes of door openings be used:
27in x 5%in(686mm x 140mm)
24 in x 5% in (610 mm x 140 mm)
18 in x 5% in (457 mm x 140 mm)
12 in x 5 in (305 mm x 127 mm)

. BASEBOARDS hOR CONTROL GEAR

7. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, columns with doors and door
openings shall be fitted with baseboards for control gear. The baseboards shall
be manufactured from material which is substantially non-hygroscopic.

BASEPLATES
8. Baseplates, if required by the purchaser, shall be in the form of a flat mild
iteel plate not less than % in (6-3 mm)thick, suitably protected, and having the
following minimum areas :
a. For columns having mounting heights 16 ft 6 in (5.03 m) or less:
1 ftg (0.093 ma).
b. For columns having mounting heights more than 16 ft 6 fn (5.03 m):
1.5 ft* (0.14 ma).
EARTHING
9. All metal parts of the column shail be earthed, and the coIumn and bracket
shall be electrically continuous.
Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, columns shall be provided
with a corrosion resistant terminal having substantial contact surfaces for the
attachment of an earthing lead. This temiinal shall be readily accessible. Where
a bolt is used, it shall be not less than % in (6-3mm)diameter.
SERVICE SLOTS
10. Service slots shall be about 6 in long x 3 in wide (152 mm x 76 nun), the
top of the slots being abotit 12 in (305 mm) below ground level. Columns shall
permit a gas pipe or an electric cable to reach the lantern or lanterns. All sharp
edges shall be removed from service slots and holes in columns.

RELATFYE POSITIONS OF DOOR OPENINGS, SERi'íQ3 SLOTS AND BRACKET ARMS

11. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, when viewed along the axis
of the column, the centre lines of the door opening and of the service slot shall
be in line, .-:. ..
