ENGLISH SECOND TERM EXAMINATION Level: 2nd year.
Name & Class: ................................................................................................... Due Time: 2 hours.
I) Part One: Reading comprehension. (15pts)
- Read the text carefully and do the following activities
Acid pollution occurs when fuel like wood, coal and oil are burned to produce energy. When
the fuel is burned, poisonous oxides pour into the atmosphere along with the smoke from factory
chimneys, and the fumes from the exhausts of motor vehicles.
When there is little wind, these oxides do not travel far and fall on earth as acid dust. When
acid falls on the surface of a building, it begins to eat away the stone. Many famous buildings
throughout the world are being eaten away by acid dust: the Statue of Liberty in New York, [Link]’s
Cathedral in London, the Taj Mahal in India and the Pantheon in Greece. People’s health is also
damaged because acid dust mixes with fog to form smog which is especially dangerous for the very
young people with breathing and heart problems.
Strong winds keep oxides in the atmosphere and carry them for hundreds of kilometres. In the
air, oxides react with moisture to produce acid rain or snow which can seriously damage plants and
trees.
Lakes have a wealth of wildlife which can be killed in months or even in days because of acid
pollution. As well as the acid rain or snow which falls directly into the lake, there are normally rivers
and streams flowing into the air carrying acid. The most dangerous time of wildlife is when the snow
melts in the spring. The snow has been collecting acid all through the winter, and when it melts, this
highly poisonous acid is emptied into the lake when the young of many species are just starting their
life.
