Q1). Define Formwork and name the formwork components with respect to slab and wall
formwork
Q2). List the important checks that should be performed on formwork prior to placing concrete
Q3). Explain what is meant by a kicker or starter in the context of wall or column formwork.
Q4). What is meant by striking off and when should you do this.
Q5). In the design of slab formwork describe the loads that may need to be taken into
consideration.
Q6). Discuss the factors that influence the pressure exerted on vertical formwork during the
placing of concrete
Q7). Explain the slipform method.
Q8). Determine the spacing of 50mm x 100mm joists and 50mm x 150mm stringers used with 20
mm thick plywood as formwork to support a concrete slab. The total design load that the
formwork has to support is 10kPa. The allowable flexural stress for the plywood is 8 N/mm2 and
the allowable flexural stress for the joists is 10 N/mm2. (Consider flexure only in your analysis)
Q9). For the same problem as above if the design criteria is that none of the elements should
exceed the allowable shear stress and the allowable shear stress for plywood is 0.8N/mm2 and for
the joists and stringers is 2.0 N/mm2. Determine the spacing of joists and stringers.
Q10). For the same problem as above, the design criteria is that none of the elements should
exceed the allowable deflection of span/360. The modulus of elasticity for plywood, for the
joists and stringers is 12000Mpa. Determine the spacing of joists and stringers. The deflection
for simply supported cases is given as δ = 5WL4/384EI
Q11). From the solutions to the problems in Q8), Q9) and Q10), select the most appropriate
spacing for joists and stringers. For the selected spacing of joists and stringers determine the
suitable spacing of props. Assume the same data given for joists are applicable to stringers as
well.
Q12). Formwork supporting a load of 10kPa comprise of plywood ( σall=10 MPa) facing
supported on joists and stringers. The 50 x 100 mm joists ( σall=12 MPa) are placed at 400mm
centers. Determine the thickness of the plywood and the spacing of the stringers. ( In your
analysis consider only flexure)
