TOPIC: Rizal’s Early Travels and First Homecoming
Instruction: As you do your self-directed study, you might want to answer the following
questions on your own and at your own pace. We will discuss these quickly when we return
to the classroom.

1.) What do Rizal’s reading list tell us about Rizal’s intellectual and literary interests,
and how these influenced him?

2.) Observe how Rizal got inspired by the Black Americans and by the Native
Americans.

3.) What organizations and clubs (political, social, civic, etc.) did Rizal join while he
was in Europe? What kinds of organizations were these?

4.) How did Rizal come to be seen as a Seditionist by the Spaniards? In short, study the
origins.

5.) Was Rizal really a doctor? Was Rizal licensed to practice as a medical doctor?

6.) What did Rizal do, during and after he completed his studies in Spain?

7.) In his travels, observe Rizal’s activities and the places where he went around
Europe.

8.) Also, study Rizal’s literary activities and writings while he was in Europe.

9.) What did Rizal see and what did Rizal like about the places (Madrid, Heidelberg,
Leipzig, Berlin) that he visited?
10.) How and when did the friendship between Jose Rizal and Ferdinand Blumentritt
begin?

11.) Look at Rizal’s views and how he compared Filipina women and German women.

12.) What were the difficulties that Rizal encountered in Berlin?

13.) Describe the encounter between Rizal and Blumentritt.

14.) Describe the Noli Me Tangere. What was its purpose, according to Rizal?

15.) What places did Rizal and Viola see and visit in their tours around Europe (such
as in Austria-Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Italy)? How did they enjoy their travels in
these places?

16.) What were the reasons behind Rizal’s return home to Calamba?

17.) How did the people view Rizal’s return and his services as a doctor and as a
member of the community?

18.) How did the Spanish (more specifically, government, the universities and the
Church) respond to Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere?

19.) How did Filipinos respond when they read the Noli Me Tangere?

20.) How was Rizal an agent in the protests against the Dominican friars? What were
the contents in Rizal’s report?

21.) What was the Dominican response to Rizal’s report?


22.) Study the Hacienda de Calamba Court Case. Who filed the case? What was the
decision?

23.) Why did Rizal’s Homecoming end in tragedy?

24.) What places did Rizal go to when he left the Philippines again for the 2nd time?
What did he do there?

25.) Lastly, take note of the ships that Rizal rode on during his travels. These are
possibly important as well.
