12.5-3 A Feed Mixture Weighing 200 KG of Unknown Composition Containing Water, Acetic Acid

The original feed mixture contained 3.2% acetic acid, 94.8% water, and 2% isopropyl ether. The extract layer contained 15% acetic acid, 3% water, and 82% isopropyl ether. Material and component balances were used to determine the compositions by setting overall material balances equal and solving simultaneous equations for the unknown compositions.

5-3 A feed mixture weighing 200 kg of unknown composition containing water, acetic acid
and isopropyl ether is contacted in a single stage with 280 kg mixture containing 40 wt % acetic acid,
10 wt % water and 50 wt % isopropyl ether. The resulting raffinate layer weighs 320 kg and contains
29.5 wt % acetic acid, 66.5 wt % water and 4.0 wt % isopropyl ether. Determine the original
composition of the feed mixture and the composition of the resulting extract layer.

Using the overall material balance, both V1 and M can be found.

𝑀 = 𝐿0 + 𝑉2 = 𝐿1 + 𝑉1
280 + 200 = 𝑉1 + 320 = 𝑀
𝑉1 = 160,
𝑀 = 480

Use the binary diagram to plot a tie line from L1 to V1 by following horizontally to the equilibrium line
(dotted purple line), then drawing a line down to the 45° line and following it horizontally back to V1.
The extract composition can now be found:
yA1 = 0.15,
yB1 = 0.03,
yC1 = 0.82

Next, a material balance can be used to find xAM.

𝑀𝑥𝐴𝑀 = 𝐿1𝑥𝐴1 + 𝑉1𝑦𝐴1

320(0.295) + 160(0.15) = 480𝑥𝐴𝑀
𝑥𝐴𝑀 = 0.2467

The inlet composition can also be found for A.

𝑀𝑥𝐴𝑀 = 𝐿0𝑥𝐴0 + 𝑉2𝑦𝐴2

200(𝑥𝐴0) + 280(0.4) = 480(0.2462)
𝑥𝐴0 = 0.032

Following the same procedure, xCM and xC0 can be found also.

𝑀𝑥𝐶𝑀 = 𝐿1𝑥𝐶1 + 𝑉1𝑦𝐶1

320(0.04) + 160(0.82) = 480(𝑥𝐶𝑀)
𝑥𝐶𝑀 = 0.3
𝑀𝑥𝐶𝑀 = 𝐿0𝑥𝐶0 + 𝑉2𝑦𝐶2
200(𝑥𝐶0) + 280(0.5) = 480(0.3)
𝑥𝐶0 = 0.02
The original feed composition is:
𝑥𝐴0 = 0.032,
𝑥𝐶0 = 0.02,
𝑥𝐵0 = 0.948

To solve graphically, plot point M and connect V2 through M to locate L0 on diagram.
