1. News presented in Amharic with few English words inside titled fila of the week

Fila of the week: Renewal of School

Over the past few weeks, we have encountered many changes brought to our school which we are
not used to before. Quite a number of teachers are leaving the school behind. For instance our
beloved maths teacher and hostel tutor has left us for no identified reason. Even though we wanted
some clarification the SMT just did not want to open up to us. On the other hand we are getting new
hostel tutors. One of them being Mr Torbay taking Mr Owusu Position of tutoring the lethargic
Volta-Ankobra hostel yet he was a Spartan boy in 2008. That said, I reckon that Malik is still in the
Spartan sprit and that he will support Nile when Ankobra is facing Nile. Quite ironic, I must say. Our
irreplaceable Mr Domey is replaced by another Maths teacher Mr Botway as a hostel tutor. He
seems a good person since he has a mathematically transcribed DNA as Mr Domey. Lastly the
famous and novel ICT HOD (No one knows why Mr Owusu is not made the HOD since he has served
the school more than him) Mr Habadah is dethroning Mr Badoe (our test-loving and inconvincible
when it comes to adding mark physics teacher). Mr Badoe, your presence shall be missed in the
hostels and good luck in your journey out of SOS-HGIC vicinity. No more Wi-Fi problems, thanks to
Mrs Dadson new Wi-Fi system will be implemented in about 3 weeks according to Mrs Gloria which
is unbelievably underground and unrestricted. On a serious note, let’s laud our athletics team for
flying SOS-HGIC flag high as usual. ANOTHER BANGER. Thank you for your priceless attention, till we
see each other next time with another news farewell.

መግብያ

Richard meets with Genet to talk about the girl he loves so much named Fatuma. Genet is a close friend to
Fatuma also from the same country in other words they share one common language which is Amharic in
addition to English. Unfortunately, for Fatuma she finds it hard understanding and speaking English so if
someone wants to socialize or express his feelings he has to come through Genet because Genet understands
both Amharic and English. The takeaway lesson from this act is that not being able to pronounce words can
alter what you are trying to communicate and therefore when learning new language be careful with your
pronunciation for a safe conversation. The rest are presented in the form of dialogues.

Richard: Hey Genet!

Genet: Hello Richard!

Richard: How are you doing? I hope everything is going smoothly.

Genet: Oh yeah I am very fine. How are you too?

Richard: I am fine except one thing O

Genet: what is it? I want to hear

Richard: I even came here to tell you something unusual. You see I have seriously fallen in love with your friend,
Fatuma, and knowing that she would not understand me even if I tell her because of the language barrier, can
you please teach me how to say, “ You are beautiful” and “I love you” in Amharic. Please help me. It is urgent!

Genet: Oh I see the problem you are going through. Are you really going to do this because the words are a bit
hard to pronounce

Richard: Oh please bring it! How hard can it be? I am willing to do whatever it takes.

Genet: wow I love your eagerness. So go and tell her “በታም ቆንጆ ነሽ” (betam konjo nesh) and
“ትመችኛለሽ”( tmecginalesh)

Richard: Are you sure this is the correct thing to say

Genet: Trust me! And when you go there act like a real man.

Richard: Have faith in me. In the next 20 minutes I will propose to her and she will accept it. You don’t know me
O.

Genet: Okay we shall see. Don’t forget to come and tell me what happened. Bye

Richard: thank you Genet. Good bye

Scene 2

Richard approaching Fatuma

Richard: I am so afraid for her reaction O. I wish she takes it easy. Let me just go and tell her once and for all.

Richard: Hey fatuma

Fatuma: Hi

Richard: “በታም ቆሻሻ ነሽ”( betam koshasha nesh) and “ ትሸችኛለሽ”( tshechignalesh)

Fatuma: ከምርህን ነው! ምን አይነቱ ነው በናታችሁ!

She slaps him hard

Fatuma: ከ አሁን በኋላ አተገቤ እንዳትደርስ እሺ

Richard: what I have I done wrong? To himself and the audience

Goes to genet and tells her everything that happened in a muffled voice

Genet: oh you should have practised what I told you earlier and now go and say the right thing to her and ask
for forgiveness from her

Richard: does it mean I said the incorrect thing which changed the whole meaning? Repeat what you said please

Genet repeats it and Richard practising it in private and perfects it and for a second time he approaches to ask
for forgiveness ይቅርታ and say the right thing she gives him a hug
