GEC 18 (ETHICS)
ACTIVITY 2
Instruction: Briefly discuss your answer to the following questions. To be submitted on or before
October 6, 2020 (Tuesday).
1. Differentiate “Ethics” from “Morality” and give example to demonstrate the
differences.
Ethics Morality
Ethics is the set of moral principles that guide a Morality refers to guidelines that you can use to
person's behavior. These morals are shaped by determine what you ought to do in a particular
social norms, cultural practices, and religious situation. Morality also allows you to figure out
influences. Ethics reflect beliefs about what is whether a particular decision or action is right
right, what is wrong, what is just, what is or wrong. Morality is focused on solving
unjust, what is good, and what is bad in terms particular problems. However, one action can
of human behavior. They serve as a compass to be acceptable to a society but immoral to
direct how people should behave toward each another society, specially those who have
other, understand and fulfill their obligations to different beliefs and laws.
society, and live their lives.
Example: Example:
In high school, it is required to wear proper In instance, wearing a uniform is a must but
uniform when entering the school. It is a rule your family can’t afford a uniform. Your core
set by the head. So, if you wear your uniform, values may tell you it is wrong since it’s a rule.
you’re a good student. However, your morality will you tell you that
you need to go to school even without wearing
a proper uniform. As such, you might end up
breaking the rules but, for the right reasons.
2. Have you already encountered a moral dilemma? How did you respond to it?
One time, me and friends hangout to a mall we have fun and ate a lot. While we are at it, I
saw a familiar face to a certain fast food chain. It is the girlfriend of one my friend (which is
not present in our hangout), she’s with a certain guy and they look affectionate to each other.
Only I saw about this. The first thing that came out of my mind is to take a picture for
evidence to show to my friend so I took one. But, before I send it I had a second thought.
What if I was wrong and ended up ruining their relationship? And it might end our
friendship as well. So in the end, I didn’t send to my friend and just forget about it.
3. Write a short reflection on Ima’s position on cultural relativism. Are we in a position to
morally judge a particular cultural practice? (Ima Relativism, Page 7 of Lesson 1
Module)
Judging a certain society base on their cultural practice whether it is moral or immoral is
wrong. We as an individual have our own norms in our society and it is what we based our actions
for if it’s right or wrong, but these norms might be different to a another society with different
culture but we’re not in the position to judge them, since these to societies have different beliefs. But
for both parties to have a common morality we might need to practice cultural relativism it is the
idea that people from different cultures can have relationships that acknowledge, respect and begin
to understand each others diverse lives. So there’s no right or wrong to a another society it’s just we
have different lives and we just need to respect one another.
