Test 2 ECE CDB3022 - CEB3013 May 2020

This document provides instructions for an online test on environmental chemical engineering taken on August 5, 2020 from 8-10 pm. [1] The test contains two questions worth 30 marks total and instructions state to answer all questions in the booklet and show steps taken. [2] Question 1 involves discussing concerns about solid waste management, proposing steps for a waste minimization program, and defining coagulation and flocculation processes. [3] Question 2 involves proposing solutions to a water crisis in Selangor from upstream pollution and sketching differences between point and non-point source pollution, and proving particles will not be completely removed in a settling tank and suggesting a method to do so.

Question 1

a. As an environmental health and community resource management specialist,

discuss why you must get concerned about solid wastes.
[5 marks]

b. Greenplus Sdn. Bhd. is a local company that has been entrusted to manage
solid waste in your residential area. As an initiative to minimize solid waste
generation, the head of the company's operations has proposed to initiate a
recycling program for the area. Propose the best first step to be implemented
in a waste minimization program and Justify your answer. For further
improvement, analyze and propose the other possible steps that could be added
to help the initiative.
[9 marks]

c. In a primary wastewater treatment, coagulation and flocculation are carried out

to facilitate removal of colloidal particles. Define these two processes and
explain their differences. Support your answer by providing related process
diagrams.
[6 marks]
Question 2

a. Government studies have concluded that water catchment areas in Selangor

would provide sufficient water supply for the public until 2050, provided that
controls were in place to limit population growth and that the Langat 2 Water
Treatment Plant was built to cater new developments. However, recently,
Selangor had a disruption in the water rationing exercise where some areas
that were supposed to have water did not receive their ration as scheduled. The
reason given by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS) was that the
situation had not been truly stable with the erratic pollutant content in Sungai
Langat. Since water treatment plants are always placed downstream to ensure
sufficient collection of water and storage, the pollution must have occurred
further upstream and that means parts of water catchment areas have been
invaded by human activities. As an environmental engineer consulting the
state government, propose possible solutions to the above-mentioned crisis.
Additionally, sketch the differences between point source and non-point
source.

[10 marks]

b. A water treatment plant has a flow rate of 1.5 m3/s. The settling tank at the
plant has an effective settling volume that is 30 m long, 4 m height and 8 m
wide. If the particles have a settling velocity of 0.005 m/s, it was found that
the particles will not be completely removed during the sedimentation. Prove
this statement and suggest an appropriate method that can be applied to
completely remove the particles.
[10 marks]
