Question 2
a. Government studies have concluded that water catchment areas in Selangor
would provide sufficient water supply for the public until 2050, provided that
controls were in place to limit population growth and that the Langat 2 Water
Treatment Plant was built to cater new developments. However, recently,
Selangor had a disruption in the water rationing exercise where some areas
that were supposed to have water did not receive their ration as scheduled. The
reason given by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS) was that the
situation had not been truly stable with the erratic pollutant content in Sungai
Langat. Since water treatment plants are always placed downstream to ensure
sufficient collection of water and storage, the pollution must have occurred
further upstream and that means parts of water catchment areas have been
invaded by human activities. As an environmental engineer consulting the
state government, propose possible solutions to the above-mentioned crisis.
Additionally, sketch the differences between point source and non-point
source.
[10 marks]
b. A water treatment plant has a flow rate of 1.5 m3/s. The settling tank at the
plant has an effective settling volume that is 30 m long, 4 m height and 8 m
wide. If the particles have a settling velocity of 0.005 m/s, it was found that
the particles will not be completely removed during the sedimentation. Prove
this statement and suggest an appropriate method that can be applied to
completely remove the particles.
