ASSIGNMENT 3 [100 marks]

1. Starting from first principles, derive the transfer functions H1(s)/ Q(s) and
H2(s)/ Q(s) for the liquid-level system shown in FIGURE Q1. The
resistances are linear and R1 = R2 = 1. Note that two streams are flowing
out from tank 1, one of which flows into tank 2. You are expected to give
numerical values of the parameters in the transfer functions and to show
clearly how you derived the transfer functions. [15 marks]

FIGURE Q1

2. The two tanks shown in FIGURE Q2 are connected in an interacting

fashion. The system is initially at steady state with q = 10 cfm. The
following data apply to the tanks: A1 = 1 ft2, A2 = 1.25 ft2, R1 = 1 ft/ cfm and R2
= 0.8 ft/cfm.

FIGURE Q2
i) Starting from first principle, determine the transfer function that
relates H1’(s) and Q’(s) and H2’(s) and Q’(s), in which they are all
deviation variables. You are expected to give numerical values of
the parameters in the transfer functions and to show clearly how you
derived the transfer functions. [15 marks]
ii) It is given that the flow changes from 10 to 11 cfm according to a step
change. Determine K, M, Ʈ and , for the transfer function that
relates H2’(s) and Q’(s). In addition, classify your system and justify
your answer. [5 marks]
iii) Determine the step response from (ii). [5 marks]
iv) Determine the initial levels h1(0) and h2(0) in the tanks. [5 marks]
v) Estimate the new steady-state value of h1 and h2. [5 marks]

3. The heat transfer equipment shown in FIGURE Q3 consists of two tanks,

one nested inside the other. Heat is transferred by convection through the
wall of the inner tank. The contents of each tank are well mixed.

FIGURE Q3

The following data and information apply:

a. The holdup volume of the inner tank, V1, is 1 ft3. The holdup of
the outer tank, V2, is 1 ft3.
b. The cross-sectional area for heat transfer between the tanks, A,
is 1 ft2.
c. The overall heat-transfer coefficient, h, for the flow of heat
between the tanks is 10 Btu/ (h·ft2·°F).
d. The heat capacity of fluid in each tank, C, is 1 Btu/ (lb·°F). The
density of each fluid, , is 50 lb/ ft3.

Initially the temperatures of the feed stream to the outer tank and contents
of the outer tank are equal to 100 °F. The contents of the inner tank are
initially at 100 °F. At time zero, the flow of heat to the inner tank Q is
changed according to a step change from 0 to 500 Btu/h.

i) Starting from first principle, determine the transfer function that

relates temperature of the inner tank, T1’(s), and heat supply, Q’(s), in
which they are all deviation variables. You are expected to give
numerical values of the parameters in the transfer functions and to
show clearly how you derived the transfer functions. [15 marks]
ii) For a step change in Q(t), plot T1(t) versus t without solving T1’(s) and
justify your sketch. [10 marks]

4. A Process Response Curve (PRC) for a given process with a unit step
input can be seen in FIGURE Q3.

FIGURE Q3

Estimate different transfer functions models using the following:

i) First-order plus time-delay graphical method. [10 marks]
ii) Sundaresan and Krishnaswamy method. [5 marks]
iii) Second-order without time-delay using Smith's method. [10 marks]
