Earthwork Sampling Guide

1. The document provides a procedure checklist for sampling earthwork, including stockpiles and roadway bases and sub-bases. 2. It outlines steps for manually sampling stockpiles by inserting a board into the pile and taking increments from various depths, and combining increments to form field samples. 3. For roadways, it instructs marking or templating areas to take full-depth increments from, excluding underlying material, and combining increments to form field samples meeting minimum mass requirements outlined in an attached table.

Procedure Checklist
FM 1-R 090EW – Sampling of Earthwork
P F N/A

A. Stockpiles (Manual Sampling – Board/Shovel Method)

1. Shove a board vertically into a stockpile just above the sampling point.
2. Remove the outer layer and sample from the material beneath.
Take increments from the top third, mid-point, and bottom third of the volume of the
3.
stockpile.
4. Obtain a minimum of three increments.
5. Combine the increments to form a field sample without contaminating or losing any material.
Ensure that the size of the field sample equals or exceeds the approximate minimum mass
6.
needed or stated in Table 1 attached.
B. Roadway (Bases and Sub-bases)
Mark areas or place a metal template over specific areas from which increments will be
7.
taken.
8. Remove the material throughout the full depth.
9. Exclude any underlying material.
10. Combine the increments to form a field sample without contaminating or losing any material.
Ensure that the size of the field sample equals or exceeds the approximate minimum mass
11.
recommended in Table 1.
