Space Exploration

SpaceX has revolutionized space exploration by being the first privately funded company to successfully design and launch an orbital spacecraft, achieving significant cost reductions compared to national governments. Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has further intensified competition by introducing reusable spacecraft, drastically lowering operational costs. Companies in the industry must adopt similar cost-effective technologies to remain competitive against these innovators.

SURNAME

Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies corp. (SpaceX) was the first privately funded
company to successfully design and launch an orbital space craft and the first to have an in-space
docking with a crewed space station. Achievement that SpaceX has achieved were previously a
reserve of national governments. What makes these successes even more notable are their low
costs. SpaceX’ s cost model has allowed the firm to create spacecraft that are significantly less
expensive compared to those produced by national governments; a standard orbital by national
government cost $200 billion but SpaceX’s cost only $60billion. For incumbent companies to
effectively within the industry they will have to adopt a cost model similar to that of SpaceX.

The competition to achieved reduced costs for Space exploration have got even more
competitive with the introduction of Blue Origin. The cost of producing a space craft is roughly
about one percent the cost of space exploration- this divergence in prices is because of lack of re-
usability of space craft’s once they are launched. But Bezos is changing this phenomenon. Blue
origin became the first company to a fly a craft to space and then back to earth. And then repeat
the process. With this milestone that facilitates re-usability of crafts- Blue origin will enjoy
reduced cost of operations of up to 99% compared to other space explorations. If others
companies are not quick to implement technologies that allow space crafts to fly back to earth, it
will be difficult for them to compete with Jeff Bezo’s Blue Origin company.
