CASE STUDY

Instructions: Use the information provided in the case study to complete the SWOT
analysis.

Background

Prince Ali Baba Hospital is a public facility located in the capital city within the
Kingdom of the Red Sea. The hospital has 325 beds; the original structure was built in
1958; there have been various additions and renovations done over time to meet the
changing needs of health care. The hospital leadership is new and has not participated in
strategic planning previously.

Environmental Scan

Social The country’s population is growing rapidly, doubling over the last 20 years and
likely to double again by 2029. Accordingly, the population in the city has been
expanding rapidly. There has been an influx of immigration of people from neighboring
countries due to political strife. An increase in reports of abuse of women and children
has been noted. Jordan’s level of education is high although many young people are
unable to find jobs. More women are working and there has been an increased need to
child and elder care.

Regulatory The MOH has implemented new regulations regarding reporting victims of
abuse.

Technological The hospital has upgraded the radiology department within the past year
and is now able to perform CT scans, MRIs and mammograms. The hospital director and
administrator have computers; the facility has recently been wired for internet. The

Political A group of physicians within the city have been protesting their salaries. A new
Minister of Health was appointed a month ago. Several Arab countries have been
undergoing mass civil protests against their governments.

Economic The hospital receives its funding from the MOH. Two projects are being
supported in the hospital by NGOs: 1) implementation of a new sterilization department
and 2) training in leadership and management.

Health Cases of H1N1 continue to be reported. Diabetes and hypertension remain the
main health care concerns. A slight rise in HIV cases has been noted in the annual
statistics. A goal of the government is to reduce fertility rates. Infant mortality rates stand
at approximately 15 per 1000 births. From 1950 to 1995, life expectancy for men rose from

42.2 to 68.9 years, and for women from 44.3 to 71.5 years. Viral hepatitis has been identified as a
major concern by the MOH. A successful school program is in place that addresses vaccinations,
dental caries and general health issues. A trend has been noted in an increase of childhood
obesity.

Stakeholder Assessment

Internal The staff satisfaction survey results showed that staff was dissatisfied with the
educational opportunities provided by the hospital and the salary. Interviews with the
department heads revealed that equipment in the lab and nursing areas was having
frequent breakdowns; this was confirmed by the maintenance record. The hospital
director indicated that an assessment for meeting hospital standards had been done that
showed several gaps.

External During a community health meeting, the group listed several concerns,
including the quality of water and the need for additional specialists for the management
of cardiac problems, particularly community members requested more advanced
treatment options for heart attacks and complained about the lack of rapid response of
emergency medical teams. The MOH has included medical tourism and hospital
accreditation as key strategies in the national strategic plan. During an interview with the
president of the telecom company, 1000 employees located across the street from the
hospital, he expressed a concern that that the company experiences a lot of sick leave due
to chronic illnesses.

four seasons. Sustainability of the water supply is a major concern.

 An international airport is located within 30 minutes of the hospital; most tourists
enter the country here
 A bus system provides services throughout the urban area.

ex-patriot construction workers and hotel industry
Mobility of population: generally stable
