PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR
THE POOR
It is a Christian choice. It
calls on us to prioritize the
needs of the poor in order to
remove the scourge of dire
poverty from all.
POVERTY
It encompasses living
conditions, an inability to
meet basic needs because
food, clean drinking water,
proper sanitation,
education, health care and
other social services are
inaccessible.

POVERTY IN THE PHILIPPINES
It is primarily
economic.
Thousands of
Filipinos grow up
malnourished,
uneducated, and
homeless
FORMS OF POVERTY
1. Economic
impoverishment is the
most prevalent form of
poverty in the Philippines.
It brings with it the other
kinds of poverty like
powerlessness and
selfishness.
FORMS OF POVERTY
2. Relying on material
wealth- It deprives a
person of a meaningful
life.
The material wealth as
the only solution to
poverty.
What are the
causes of
poverty?
CAUSES OF POVERTY
Poverty among
Filipinos is often
attributed:
1. The poor are lazy.
2. High birth rate
Do you
think the
poor are
lazy?
1.The poor is not lazy.
The real problem is that no
matter how hard they work,
they remain stuck in poverty.
- Low paying jobs
- Lack of required skills
- Lack of educational
background.
2. High Birth Rate
Many blame the poor for
having too many children.
Because they have many
mouths to feed, it is difficult
for them to keep the whole
family well fed, clothed and
sheltered.
THE REAL CAUSES OF POVERTY
❑ Corruption- The poor do not
have access to the common
good.
❑ Goods and services are not
properly delivered.
THE CHURCH IS NOT AGAINST ALL FORMS OF
FAMILY PLANNING
1. Married couples must be free
to make decisions on the
number of children they
want.
2. Parents should make this
moral decision exhibits a
sense of responsibility to each
other and to their children.
3. Church advocates
Family Planning as a
method that can foster
deep respect.
4. Church rejects all
artificial means of birth
control.
The Teachings of the Church
Responsible family
planning and
parenthood is its
response to the problem
of population and
poverty.
The Teachings of the Church
The primary cause of
poverty is deeply rooted
in something spiritual-
in the moral behavior of
the people.
RESPONSE TO THE PROBLEMS OF POVERTY
Jesus said, “Whatever you did for
one of these least brothers of mine,
you did for me”(Mt. 25:40).
Church’s Response
As baptized followers of Christ, we
are obliged to follow His teaching
and example and do our best to
help the poor, for what we do for
them, we do for Jesus.
How can we help the poor
and fight poverty?
