WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA
(INTRODUCTION)

Social media are interactive digitally-mediated technologies that facilitate

the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, career interests, and
other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.

While challenges to the definition of social media arise due to the broad variety
of stand-alone and built-in social-media services currently available, there are
some common features:
 Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.
 User-generated content—such as text posts or comments, digital
photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions—is
the lifeblood of social media.
 Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are
designed and maintained by the social-media organization.
 Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by
connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

Users usually access social media services via web-based

apps on desktops and laptops, or download services that offer social media
functionality to their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets). As users
engage with these electronic services, they create highly interactive platforms
through which individuals, communities, and organizations can share, co-create,
discuss, participate, and modify user-generated content or self-curated content
posted online.
ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN COMMUNICATION AND
CONNECTING PEOPLE

As communication and information travel faster and faster, the world seems to
get smaller and smaller. As a result, this changes how the world communicates,
especially with today’s obsession with social media networks.

Before social media, we were extremely limited in our means to interact with
others and we were limited largely to the people that we knew in-person. There
were things we had to deal with that millennials do not have to – your
significant other’s parent answering the phone when you called, waiting for a
letter in the mail, waiting a week to get your pictures that you sent off to be
developed, and so on.

The internet and social media has drastically changed the way people all over
the world interact and communicate.

Because of social media networks, we are now able to interact with thousands
of people all over the world – this is why we see people who have thousands of
Facebook friends or tens of thousands of Twitter followers. Without social
media, that would be impossible. Social media networks allow us the
opportunity to share opinions with a far wider audience
ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN BUSINESS AND
OPPORTUNITIES

Effective use of social media can bring great opportunities for your business,
but will require some thought and planning. Moving with fast-paced
developments in online technology can help to enhance your brand, boost your
profile and perhaps even win new business.

Home computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, even internet enabled

televisions mean people can easily access the web from anywhere at any time.
Faster connections, new devices and new online applications have all helped to
change the way people work, socialise and shop.

It is now easier than ever for businesses to:

 directly target customers with marketing campaigns.

 promote new products or services.
 build brand awareness.
 Personally, interact with existing and potential customers.
 measure referrals from your social media activity to sales.

Social media can be a cheap and effective way of starting a marketing

campaign, with a big impact possible from minimal investment. Your social
media strategy should contain a smart mix of engaging content and a friendly
and responsive 'persona' can grow a focused community which is interested in
your product/service/brand and can recommend your business to others.

ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT

One of the best benefits of using the social media for entertainment is definitely
the low price. From there, you can locate and enjoy plenty of content on the
social media from your phone, TV or computer.

Popular, free, online entertainment resources include:

 YouTube

 Podcasts

 Music streaming such as Pandora or Spotify

 Instagram

 Snapchat

 Tik-Tok

 Facebook

 Twitch

Therefore, Social media can be used for fun and entertainment purpose also
apart from other things.
