Module 4 Worksheet 2
Instructions: Answer briefly—but substantially—the following:
a) Explain the difference between mountaineering and backpacking.
Firstly, mountaineering requires more technical equipmentmuch like ice
axes, crampons, and helmetsthan backpacking. This is because
mountaineering takes relatively longer, thus requiring more equipment,
preparation, and training. Secondly, when mountaineering, one should
always prepare for the worst, thus, snow baskets are required to be
brought, as compared to backpacking, where snow isn’t really
encountered.
b) In participating mountaineering and backpacking activities list down the things
that you have to consider from the most important to least important. Justify your
answer.
1. Time
- Before going backpacking or mountaineering, make sure that you have
enough time to spare, since this activity will surely take a lot of your time
2. Research
- Research about the place you are going to so you can prepare better
3. Local regulations
- It is important to know the local regulations and rules in the place you are
going to in order to avoid violating any laws
4. Equipment
- Make sure you have the appropriate hiking equipment, such as shelter,
clothing, hiking gear, filters, and more. You may also want to pack a few
other things because like the saying goes, “it’s better to have it and not
need it, than to need it and not have it.”
5. Health
- Your health is top most priority, so before planning, it’s best to have a
check up to know if you are in good condition to go mountaineering or
backpacking.
6. Company
- This consists of the people you will be going with.
7. Necessities
- Be prepared to do your private things in the forest, and bring you
essentials.
8. Training
- Training before these activities will help develop your endurance and
cardiovascular strength.
c) Given the chance to participate in an outdoor activity specifically backpacking
and mountaineering. Which would you prefer and why?
I would prefer to go backpacking first. As I have never tried any of these
activities, I am kind of worried if I would be able to finish at the top. I think
backpacking would be a good start, because it covers a shorter distance,
and the equipment needed are less expensive and convenient. I don’t
think I can afford mountaineering equipment just yet either.
