01.100.03 - Maersk Tankers Drug and Alcohol Procedure
Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to outline the practical steps to ensure compliance with the
company drug and alcohol policy contained within the Maersk Tankers Sustainability Policy. The
r visitor shall consume, be
under the influence, or in possession of any alcohol or drugs while on-board our vessels."
Scope
This procedure applies to all employees whilst on board including shore leave or transiting to/from
a vessel under the management of Maersk Tankers Technical Operations whether on duty or not.
This procedure also applies to contractors, subcontractors, visitors and any other person whilst
on board a vessel under the management of Maersk Tankers Technical Operations.
Definitions
Alcohol: Intoxicating drink containing ethanol.
Drug: A substance or medication that may affect a person's physical or mental functioning.
Under the influence: having measurable traces of a drug or alcohol in the blood, breath, or urine.
Roles and Responsibilities
The HSSEQ and Marine Operations Manager / Head of Marine Standards are responsible for the
implementation, review, and update of this procedure.
The Head of Crewing is responsible for ensuring all testing is carried out, and that records are
readily available. The Head of Crewing is also responsible for ensuring that all seagoing
employees are aware of and agree to comply with the company drug and alcohol policy prior to
embarking a company vessel. The Head of Crewing shall ensure that potential new employees
are screened.
The Master is responsible for informing, implementation and compliance with this procedure on
board the vessel. The Master is responsible for ensuring that breath testing for alcohol is carried

out in the correct manner. The Master is responsible for ensuring the on-board breath analyser is
maintained, replaced and operated as per the User Manual.
The Chief Officer is responsible for assuming all duties and responsibilities of the Master,
including those in this procedure, where the Master is suspected to be under the influence of
drugs or alcohol. The Chief Officer must also inform the shore management for immediate
support.
The OOW is responsible for ensuring that all crew members returning from shore leave report to
OOW on return.
Where the company drug and alcohol policy must be applied to the Master or if there are other
reasons that make the Master unavailable, then the Chief Officer will undertake the
responsibilities of the Master as laid out in this procedure.
Description
1.0 General
1.1 Maersk Tankers adopt a zero-tolerance stance to individuals that are in breach of the drug
and alcohol policy.
1.2 No alcohol or drugs are allowed on board except for those required for the ship's medical
supplies and prescribed medicines which have been declared and permitted on board. If there
is any doubt, shore management must be consulted.
1.3 At signing on a vessel, the Master shall present each crewmember a drug and alcohol
declaration to sign, confirming they understand the drug and alcohol policy and the
consequences of non-compliance with the policy.
1.4 The drug and alcohol declaration sheets shall be filed on-
for the duration of the crew members time on-board the vessel. Returning crewmembers must
sign a new sheet each time they re-embark the vessel.
1.5 All crew members returning from shore leave must report to the Duty OOW, in person to
confirm their return and verification of compliance.

1.6 The alcohol content should be verified by examining the content labelling when receiving
-
supply should be rejected.
1.7 In case of accidental/ unexpected supply of beverages having any Alcohol content, the
Master shall immediately contact the Marine Superintendent and seek guidance for further
action.
2.0 Testing
2.1 It is a violation of the company drug and alcohol policy to refuse to take a drug or alcohol test
as required.
2.2 If there is a suspicion by any crew of a violation of the D&A policy on board his vessel, he or
she must report this to the Master or any senior officer. The Master or senior officer must then
immediately conduct the breathalyser test on the concerned person and inform the
Designated Person Ashore (DPA) or Deputy Designated Persons Ashore (DDPA).
2.3 Pre-employment: Prior to employment, all personnel shall undergo an examination for a
Medical Certificate for Seafarers. Examination for alcohol dependency is part of the medical
examination. No personnel shall be employed by the company if a dependency on drugs or
alcohol is apparent.
2.4 Shore management shall, as a minimum on monthly basis instruct the Master to undertake
an alcohol breath test on all crew members and report the results.
2.5 The Crewing department shall arrange for annual unannounced drug and alcohol urine tests
carried out by an approved test provider. The test provider will leave a certificate with the
Master stating that the testing has been done. The results shall be sent back to the vessel
when available.
2.6 If the breathalyser results return a reading indicating no trace of alcohol on breath, the test
results are regarded as final. If the test results return a reading which indicates presence of
alcohol, the first test is considered a screening and a second test shall be administered not
less than 15 minutes and not more than 30 minutes after the first test. The second test will be
taken as the official result.

2.7 The Master on board new buildings are required to carry out an unannounced alcohol breath
test of all crew including himself as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after delivery
of vessel from the Shipyard.
2.8 In the event of a serious incident, the Master shall ensure alcohol breath testing is undertaken
as soon as it is safe to do so. If this test cannot be conducted within 2 hours of the incident,
the Master must report reasons and ensure test is conducted as soon as safe to do so.
2.9 Shore management may arrange external drug and alcohol tests to be conducted promptly
following an incident.
2.10 Employees being tested for alcohol or drugs have the right to ask for a witness during the
test.
2.11 The test conducted shall be entered into the vessels logbook.
2.12 Crew individual test results shall be maintained as confidential files by the Master.
2.13 The Breath Alcohol Tester used shall be an approved model as provided by the company in
compliance with 'US DoT's Conforming Products List for Alcohol Screening Devices.
3.0 Contraband Searches

3.2 Any crewmember joining the vessel or returning from shore leave is subject to an inspection
and search for alcoholic beverages or drugs if so requested by the gangway watchman.
3.3 Shore management reserves the right to order extra-ordinary searches of crewmember cabins
and public spaces to promote compliance with the drug and alcohol policy.
4.0 Prescribed medication.
4.1 A person on prescribed medication must provide full details to the Master when boarding. If
the Master is in doubt regarding the effects and / or legality then the Crewing department must
be contacted for advice.
5.0 Non-compliance
5.1 In the event of a confirmed breach of the drug and alcohol policy;

The involved employee will be dismissed immediately
The involved employee will be held liable for all costs associated with repatriation and any
additional expenses relating to the breach
Shore Management may adopt more stringent and enhanced procedures either vessel
specific or fleet wide for a specified time.
6.0 Dependency and treatment
6.1 If an employee, prior to a breach of the policy, reports a personal problem related to alcohol
dependency, the company will engage in reasonable actions to restore the employee back into
the work force through providing an official alcohol treatment course.
