COVID 19: Not a Joke.

Embracing the unknown is never an easy feat. Humans in nature fear what they do not understand. Thus, many
avoid the unexplainable. Fortunately, if a certain circumstance may occur, and forces humans to embrace it and then
adapt, humans will not falter nor fail against the unknown if solidarity is intact. As the philosopher Aristotle once said,
“Man is a political animal.” Meaning, that we humans can face any catastrophe and disasters thrown at us if we stand
strong, hands with each other.
The current pandemic named COVID-19 is one circumstance that has forced the humans to embrace the “new normal”
and adapt. The leaders of the medical field in various countries have already informed the masses how this new normal
works; Namely, always wear masks when going out of the house, practice social distancing from other humans, wash
hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, stay home if sick, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands,
and lastly if is not an important event one must refrain of stepping outside their homes (United States Department of
Labor, 2020). These rules are what the masses only need to follow without fail. Thus, the precautionary measures that
have been set by the world medical leaders against this virus must be thoroughly followed because firstly COVID-19 is
highly contagious, and secondly, it is extremely deadly.

First, COVID-19 pandemic is a without a doubt a disaster that is highly contagious. Disaster, as defined, is a
dangerous situation or threat from natural or man-made events that disrupt the functions of individuals in a community
(Zibulewsky, 2001). The virus originated in Wuhan, China, which later has spread throughout across the globe to various
countries (Shereen, Khan, Kazmi, Bashir, Siddique, 2020). The Philippines is one country who has greatly suffered the
consequences of not taking immediate precautionary measures when the virus had first invaded the territory with now
having 420,000+ recorded cases as of November 2020 (Gonzales, 2020). The virus is dangerously infectious. Coronavirus
generally spreads from individual to individual through respiratory droplets that are delivered when you inhale, talk, or
sneeze. These droplets can be inhaled or dropped in a person’s mouth. Airborne transmission can be possible because
COVID-19 particles are smaller than normal droplets that allows the virus to linger in the air for minutes to hours
(Lanfranco, 2020). The smallest contact with a patient who is tested positive with COVID-19, will have you harboring the
virus inside your body. That is the main reason why COVID-19 is disastrously infectious. It infects people easily. Through
the air they breathe, and even their bodily fluids. If you encounter people who have tested positive, you may as well also
be infected (McCrimmon, 2020).

Second, COVID-19 is an extremely dangerous virus that will be the literal death of a human. Precautionary
measure will alleviate the chances of contracting the disease despite COVID-19 not choosing which person it will inhibit,
it will lessen the risk of being infected (DOH, 2020). If a person has already an underlying illness, the deadliness of
COVID-19 intensifies. Nonetheless, danger level does not minimize if a person does not have an underlying illness before
being infected (Live Science, 2020). The possibilities of recovery and death are both equal probable futures to a person
infected by COVID-19. If an infected has not received proper medical care as soon as they tested positive or felt early
symptoms, then the worst outcome would be death (Neuman, 2020). Sever COVID-19 infections is driven not only just
by viral damage to the cells but by the reactive storm of inflammation that harms the lungs and other major organs
(Schnabell, 2020). Furthermore, the virus overwhelms the body systems, it spreads faster inside because it can (Martin,
2020).

Thus, with the crucial information provided, precautionary measures set by the medical leaders of the world
must be followed without fail because of the infectiousness and deadliness of the COVID-19 virus. If people fail to follow
those simple rules, unfortunate circumstances may happen because of their ignorance to the severity of the current
situation of the world. Life of a person is at stake, that is why each human must be responsible for his actions in this time
of disaster. Death can be avoided by following simple rules that minimize the risk of a person being infected and infect
other people they meet.

Traditional Healers and the HIV Crisis in Africa:  Toward an Integrated Approach
Anthropology
The HIV virus is currently destroying all facets of African life. It therefore is imperative that a new holistic form
of health education and accessible treatment be implemented in African public health policy which improves
dissemination of prevention and treatment programs, while maintaining the cultural infrastructure. Drawing
on government and NGO reports, as well as other documentary sources, this paper examines the nature of
current efforts and the state of health care practices in Africa. I review access to modern health care and
factors which inhibit local utilization of these resources, as well as traditional African beliefs about medicine,
disease, and healthcare. This review indicates that a collaboration of western and traditional medical care and
philosophy can help slow the spread of HIV in Africa. This paper encourages the acceptance and financial
support of traditional health practitioners in this effort owing to their accessibility and affordability and their
cultural compatibility with the community.

Thesis Statement: A collaboration of western and traditional medical care and philosophy can help
slow the spread of HIV in Africa.

Summary: This paper is about how HIV virus is currently destroying all facets of African life and indicates
that a collaboration of western and traditional medical care and philosophy can help slow the spread of HIV
in Africa.

Echoes from the Underground

European and American Literature
Friedrich Nietzsche notably referred to the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky as “the only psychologist from whom I
have anything to learn.” Dostoevsky’s ability to encapsulate the darkest and most twisted depths of the human psyche
within his characters has had a profound impact on those writers operating on the periphery of society. Through
research on his writing style, biography, and a close reading of his novel Notes from the Underground I am exploring the
impact of his most famous outcast, the Underground Man, on counterculture writers in America during the great
subculture upsurge of the 1950s and 60s. Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac employ both the universal themes
expressed by the Underground Man as well as more specific stylistic and textual similarities. Through my research I have
drawn parallels between these three writers with respect to their literary works as well as the impact of both their
personal lives and the worlds that they inhabit. The paper affirms that Dostoevsky has had a profound influence on the
geography of the Underground and that this literary topos has had an impact on the writers who continue to inhabit that
space.

Thesis Statement: The paper affirms that Dostoevsky has had a profound influence on the geography
of the Underground and that this literary topos has had an impact on the writers who continue to inhabit
