Corporate Social Responsibility of Antrix Corporation Limited

About Company: Antrix Corporation Limited, incorporated on 28th September 1992, is
wholly owned Government of India Company under the administrative control of Department
of Space. Antrix is the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
Antrix Corporation limited is a Marketing arm of ISRO for promotion and commercial
exploitation of space products, technical consultancy services and transfer of technologies
developed by ISRO.
CSR Activity:
“The idea of social responsibilities that supposes that the corporation not only has economic
and legal obligations but has certain responsibilities to society which extends beyond these
obligations.” – McGuire W. Joseph
CSR is about businesses and other organizations going beyond legal obligations to manage
the impact they have on the environment and society. Today, CSR has become most
important part of company – it influences all aspects of a company’s operations. Six Core
characteristics of CSR are:
• Voluntary
• Managing externalities
• Multiple stakeholder orientation
• Alignment of social and economic responsibilities
• Practices and values
• Beyond philanthropy
CSR Activity of Antrix Corporation Limited:
1)Village Adoption by ACL:
ACL has adopted a village, namely – Bramhasandra in Sira Taluk, Tumkur district,
Karnataka, to make it a model village with the help of BAIF – NGO. It is a drought
prone, backward village.
Activities like Tank Rejuvenation, Household Toilets to make village ODF, Rain
Water Harvesting, Agro-Forestry, Income generating Activities, Livestock
Development, Harnessing Solar Energy, Organic Farming, Skill Development etc.,
are being implemented.
It is a voluntary activity done by ACL – Not a legal obligation. However, on
April1,2014, India became the first country to legally mandate corporate social
responsibility with some terms and conditions attached to it.
Environmental degradation or unexpected occurrence of catastrophic events are
regarded as an externality. So, to provide assistance to drought prone village is
regarded as managing externality.
The stakeholders for ACL would be Government, ISRO, DRDO, Shareholders,
Employees and community.
2)Empowerment of Women:
The program focuses on catalysing sustainable jobs and livelihood opportunities for
rural women weavers at Bagalkot and Hubli districts of Karnataka through women on
wings and its business partner GoCoop.
The ACL created a good alignment between social and economic activity by
catalysing job opportunities with measurable impact on socio-economic conditions.
Empowerment of women shows values of the company and collectively enhancing
the role women in society. The ACL clearly carries out the activity which deals with
one of the most important social issue.
Suggestion:
The Antrix Corporation Limited can also start with a training and skill development
programme for those who are willing to move forward in the field of space, aeronautics,
engineer and the like. This training programme can target those students from village or town
who are lacking resources to skill up and get employed relatively. This activity can be said as
a beyond philanthropy as it revolves around the core business issue.
Due to poverty, illiteracy and lack of awareness, many students or youth is not able to enrol
themselves for a skill development programme relating to space, engineering, and the like.
Providing this will benefit both the company and the one who is willing to get educated.
