Welcome to the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society

I am very pleased to offer a personal welcome to this annual meeting. Our theme, “Christianity and Islam,”
could scarcely be more relevant and urgent. The Christian encounter with Islam can now be traced
through a millennium and a half of engagement. As evangelical scholars, our responsibility is to be ever
faithful to Christ and ever more truthful in our commitment to the gospel. We are also called to truth, and
to understanding the world around us more accurately and thoughtfully. That certainly includes our
understanding of Islam, which has from the beginning represented an enormous challenge to Christian
evangelism, apologetics, theology, and cultural engagement.

Three evangelical scholars will help us in this task through plenary addresses:
Ayman S. Ibrahim, Bill and Connie Jenkins Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Director of
the Jenkins Center for the Christian Understanding of Islam at The Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary, will speak on The Authority and Function of the Quran in Islam.
Timothy C. Tennett, President and Professor of World Christianity at Asbury Theological Seminary,
will speak on Through the Prism: The Trinity and the Islamic Metanarrative.
Thomas S. Kidd, Distinguished Professor of History, James Vardaman Endowed Professor of
History, and Associate Director, Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University, will speak on
American Christians and Islam: From the Colonial Era to the Post-9/11 World.

Another highlight will be the Presidential Address, brought by ETS President Craig S. Kenner, F. M. and Ada
Thompson Chair of Biblical Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary who will speak on A Mind for the Body.

I am very thankful for the devoted work of the ETS staff and leadership. As planning for this meeting
began, Michael Thigpen was our Executive Director, and we are thankful for his years of commitment and
service. Our new Executive Director, Ken Magnuson is providing excellent leadership for a new era. Bonnie
Thigpen, our Meeting Planner, is indispensable. Together, they have demonstrated remarkable
commitment and skill in a very difficult season.

As always, we look forward to the presentation of hundreds of other papers and the meeting together of
evangelical scholars as the Evangelical Theological Society – every word in that name is significant. We are
a society, and it distresses us that we cannot be physically together for this annual meeting. We will miss
the social dimension of meeting together in one city for several event-filled days. But, I am very thankful
for the technology that will enable us to meet together in a different mode. It is no small thing that we are
able to hold an annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society in the midst of a pandemic. This
challenge adds further urgency to our meeting.

I want to encourage you to take full advantage of the ability to participate fully in the meeting by digital
means. The work of evangelical scholarship goes on, and so must we. Engage with energy, learn with
eagerness, encourage younger scholars, support our sponsors, connect and converse as best you can, and
help us make history together. We will not meet together in Providence, Rhode Island this year, but we will
be meeting by the gracious providence of God. For that, we are thankful.

Sincerely,
R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
ETS President-Elect and Program Chair
President and Professor of Christian Theology

Virtual Annual Meeting Details

The 2020 ETS Annual Meeting will be held November 16-20, with pre-recorded paper presentations
available for viewing beginning Monday, November 9th. Watch the presentations at your convenience
and then join the live sessions starting on Monday, November 16th. There are 2 types of live sessions:
full length sessions, as well as shorter Q&A sessions for the pre-recorded papers. All of the live portions
of the conference will be recorded and available for viewing after the meeting has ended.

Conference Registration

Registration is available at www.etsjets.org/registration_landing. If you need assistance or have

questions about conference registration, please email [email protected].

Parallel sessions

The parallel sessions are composed of five different session types.

︎ Program Unit Sessions

are a combination of invited papers and proposed presentations which were selected by the program
unit steering committees. ETS has three types of program units: Consultations, Study Groups, and
Sections. Consultations are new program units which are responsible for one session of invited
papers at the annual meeting. Study Groups are narrowly focused groups which require active,
collaborative participation by the group members. ETS encourages Study Groups to publish the
results of their work. Study groups are responsible for one session of invited papers at the annual
meeting. Sections are broadly defined groups that represent general areas of interest. Responsible
for one session of invited papers and one session of papers drawn from member submissions, the
Sections offer the most access for unsolicited papers.

Affiliated Society Sessions

feature presentations that were selected and arranged by one of the three societies which join ETS
each year: the Evangelical Philosophical Society, the Near East Archaeological Society, and the
Adventist Theological Society.

Discipline Specific Sessions

are composed of presentations that were submitted by ETS members and rated by a panel of scholars
who served under the direction of the program chair. These presentations have been grouped into
basic disciplines: Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, Church History/Historical
Theology, and Practical Theology.

Theme Sessions
are composed of presentations submitted by members, which address the conference theme. These
presentations were evaluated by a panel of scholars under the direction of the program chair. The
theme presentations have been arranged into cohesive sessions based on texts, topics, and methods.
