Saving
The term Saving Can be defined as the wise use of resources. Time, money
and other resources can be saved we have to save our resources because our
needs and wants and the available resources do not match
What are the purposes of Saving?
There are different purposes of saving some of them are:-
For times of sickness, disability or retirement
Educating Children
Emergency Cases
Future Consumption
Investment
Social Obligations etc…
The need for new thinking in saving
- one way to help develop the habit of saving is to transform the way you think
about spending. This may be related to the way you consume things. Example in
Ethiopia there is a tending to buy expensive imported products than the locally
produced items it is important to change this kind of mentality
- Another challenge is how to avoid wastage during production in the process of
production of goods and services, we have to use the inputs properly to reduce our
costs. Wastage of inputs is a major cause of increased cost of production.
- Buying more locally produced goods is more profitable for local industry and
therefore good for development.
Ways of Improving the Habit of Saving
- Saving is an activity that very much depends on income. Income is money that you
receive From the income that you get you may use part of if and keep any extra for
savings you save money for future use the first step to start Saving is to decide what
you have to spend you should not waste money on item that you do not need After
spend on what you need the rest can be saved you should balance your needs and
wants with Savings.
- One factor that works against saving is doing things without planning when you
are planning, you need to think about your Future.
- In developing the Habit of saving there are two issues that you need to
consider:-
A. The avoidance of Extravagance and living within your means
B. To develop the skills of ability to live within your needs.
Traditional and Modern Institutions of Saving In Ethiopia
These Institutions are divided into two :- Traditional and Modern Institutions.
The Traditional Institutions are those established by the Community in
order to save The main Traditional Saving institutions are “Equb” and
“Idir” Both of them are used in Ethiopia.
Modern Financial Instructions are those help to manage their money and
property The main modern institutions are banks and insurance
Companies and Credit association.
Saving as an instrument of Investment and Development
- Banks play a significant role in the accumulation of Capital. This is because they
are instruments through which funds are made available by collecting from
those people who save. If you save enough money you may be able to invest in
business opportunities Investment is essential in the process of development.
- There are other sources of funding that can be used for development these are
international financial institutions.
- The well – Known big international institutions are world Bank Groups and
IMF/International Monetary Fund). IMF is established to provide funding for
global development.

Active Community Participation
Civil Means related to Citizens or to the public Civic participations are civil actions
outside of politics, religion, Military etc.. Civil actions do not have any interest other than
Cooperating and working to promote the common good and welfare of the people.
- Civil Societies are formed by the free will of their members. Participating in
Civil Society is performed Voluntarily in order to enhance Social development
and Outhunt the democratic process.
- Active Community participation concerns both the rights and responsibilities
of Citizens.
- Civic participation includes taking part in the governance of Social and
Political groups such as Schools, Labor union, religions and other groups Civic
participation requires commitment, dedication, Commitment, team Spirit ,
deadness to work with others for the common good civic participation should
be performed with in the frame work of constitution and the laws of the land.
- Commitment and dedication mean having the Strength to maintain the effort
to achieve certain goods.
Monitoring and Influencing Actions of Government bodies (Organs)
- Community participation is one of the keys to the empowerment of a
Community Community participation requires the active involvement of
Citizens in the Social economic and Political Spheres at all levels and in all
forms.
- One of the active community participation is political participation by which
citizens make their voices heard. Active Community political Participation
Serves as a bridge b/n the people and the government.
- Such Community political participation involves:-
Voting in elections.
Encouraging people /Citizens/ to become involved in running for office.
Financing Campaigns,
Drafting and implementing election laws,
Taking part in political Campaigning
Demons fractions and Petitions.
