SUMMARY
Public speaking is one of the most important and most fearful forms of communication.
It is a vital skill that each student should practice and hone in order to be an effective speaker.
In our Speech and Theater Arts course, Mrs. Gleacel Hernandez initiated a virtual chat
where the attendance will be based on our comments, remarks and other replies to the
discussion made in the virtual chat. The discusssion started with a recall asking the four
modes of speech delivery and the types of speeches according to purpose. Everybody was
able to answer the given questions correctly. It is an indication that the class studied and
learned well from the topic itself. The following questions are personal and based from our
experiences while making a video tape of the chosen speech according to its purpose. Some
were not done yet when they asked if they were able to do it while majority of the class
submitted their work already. Each one of us shared our experiences during the delivery of
the speech and most of us had a good experinece in it. We are also asked why do we think
some speakers feel nervous during speeches and how could we overcome them and develop
self- confidence instead. Speech anxiety is the most common fear that people experience
when speaking in public. Most of us answered that due to presssure brought by the
environment and lack of preparation and practice, we become not confident to deliver our
speeches. I believe that we could overcome the nervousness and be confident infront of the
crowd if we practice our body language like gestures, posture, expressions and voice and
prepare the things needed like the attire, accessories and our piece. On the other hand, if we
practice it too much there is a tendency that we overdo it. We could practice the techniques of
confident body language in our day-to-day life so that they become natural and deep-rooted
habits and then we will not have to consciously think about it when we are on stage.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Public speaking is the process of making and delivering a message to the audience.
Effective public speaking involves understanding your audience preferences, choosing
elements for the speech, and delivering your message effectively. Effective public speakers
understand that they must plan, organize, and revise their work before speaking. It is very
essential in the field of education since it can be used for delivering professional
presentations, lessons and even motivational speeches on seminar. Developing public
speaking skills requires exposure and practice to deliver information that makes the audience
eager to hear more from you. It is very evident that not everyone has the innate capacity to
speak in public but this is the ability that every educator must possess.
In order to be an effective speaker, you need to eradicate the fear, and focus on how you
can deliver your speech in an effective manner. Preparation is one they keys to public
speaking. Spend much time in organizing your speech so that it flows logically. For
inspirational speech, try watching other great speakers on youtube delivering their
motivational speech. You may also read the transcripts to see how they crafted their speeches.
Practice saying your speech out loud in front of a mirror is a great way practice until you
become comfortable with it.
Appearance is considered an aspect in public speaking and has social significance for the
audience. It also includes the things that people wear such as accessories, ties, shoes and
glasses. It also conveys about a speaker's personality, background and financial status. The
audience may judge the speaker based on their appearance that is why the speakers invest
their time in grooming themselves before appearing to the audience. A speaker should
consider what dress is appropriate for the event he/she attends to. On the other hand, if causal
dresses are allowed, maybe that will make you feel comfortable and efficient. Think about
how great you feel when you are groomed because when you look great, you also feel great.
Lastly, put a big smile on your face before you begin speaking. The audience will probably
smile back at you and this will make you more relaxed and confident.
