Air Particles: Sources and Standards

This document discusses air particles, including their natural and human-caused sources, sizes, and how they are classified. It notes that particles come from bushfires, dust storms, pollens, sea spray, motor vehicles, industries, and other activities. Particles are categorized as coarse (10-2.5 micrometers), fine (less than 2.5 micrometers), or ultrafine (less than 0.1 micrometers). The document also outlines Malaysia's new air quality standard and the six criteria pollutants it monitors.

AIR PARTICLES
By Dr. Rosadibah Binti Mohd Towel
AIR PARTICLES
Natural Sources
Bushfires, dust storms, pollens and sea
01 spray.

Human Activity
Motor vehicle emissions, industrial processes (eg
02 electricity generation, incinerators and stone
crushing), unpaved roads and woodheaters.

Size
‘Coarse particles’ are those between 10 and
2.5 micrometres (µm) in diameter; 'fine particles'
03 are smaller than 2.5 µm; and 'ultrafine particles'
are smaller than 0.1 µm. For comparison, the
diameter of a human hair is 70 µm and this is
seven times the diameter of the largest 'coarse
particles'.
Air Quality Standard
• New Ambient Air Quality Standard was established in order to replace
the older Malaysia Ambient Air Quality Guideline that has been used
since 1989.
• The New Ambient Air Quality Standard adopts 6 air pollutants criteria
that include 5 existing air pollutants which are:-
particulate matter with the size of less than 10 micron (PM10),
sulfur dioxide (SO2),
carbon monoxide (CO),
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2),
ground level ozone (O3) ,
particulate matter with the size of less than 2.5 micron (PM2.5)
