Giant Eagle
Supermarket Company
Gender Neutral Restrooms in
Giant Eagle Supermarkets
October 1st, 2020
OVERVIEW OF PROPOSAL (Tessa)
Giant Eagle will establish a safe space for transgender and non-binary
individuals in the year 2021. We plan to provide gender neutral restrooms in all
of our 216 Giant Eagle supermarkets .
GOALS (David)
The goal of this business proposal is to get gender neutral bathrooms in all of
the 216 Giant Eagle locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland,
and Indiana by the end of 2022. The purpose of adding these gender neutral
bathrooms is to accommodate both associates and customers who are
transgender or do not identify as a binary gender. Additionally, this will provide
parents with a child that is a different gender than them the option to use
these restrooms. This will make Giant Eagle a more inclusive environment for
transgender people, non binary people, as well as parents with children. Thus,
making shopping and working at Giant Eagle a more comfortable experience
for everyone. Giant Eagle plans to complete a company wide completion of the
more inclusive restrooms by the end of 2022.
PLANNED STEPS (Tate)
To begin, we would get our proposal approved by all members of the Giant
Eagle board. We have contacted the appropriate professionals needed for the
job. Some professionals needed would include interior designers, contractors,
and plumbers. These hires would be included in the final budget, which we
have decided would be capped at $10 million. Also going into our budget
would be the appropriate signage to be advertised outside of the new
restrooms. Closer to completion of the project, our new, more inclusive
restrooms will be promoted and advertised on social media platforms such as
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
BUDGET AND TIME FRAME (Tessa)
There are 216 Giant Eagle supermarkets to begin construction of gender
neutral restrooms at an estimated $40,000-50,000 per store. Construction is
to start in early 2021 and be completed by the end of 2022. The budget will be
a total of 10 million dollars, which includes:
● Designer, contractor, and plumbing salaries
● Supplies
● Marketing/signage expenses
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS (Brie)
The advantages to this proposal all include a better business outcome and
success for the supermarket company. Of the many advantages, creating a
gender-neutral bathroom would help the company advance with the future and
the ever-evolving social norms and regulations. As gender and equality are
more important in society now than before in previous decades, it is imperative
for businesses to adjust and adapt to the needs of their employees, customers
and consumers. This addition to the supermarkets will increase the likelihood
of gender nonbinanry, nonconforming, and transgender customers and
employees to feel as they are in a safe, comfortable, and welcoming
environment when working and/or shopping. If the customers feel as if they
are welcomed and not forced to conform to a set gender when in Giant Eagle
supermarkets, the company will continue to see a rise in business as
customers will continue to shop where they feel safe. Within the corporate
internal aspect, more diverse talent will apply for career opportunities and jobs
knowing that there are gender equal opportunities that welcome all genders.
DISADVANTAGES AND RISKS (Christy)
The risks that could result in a non agreement to the proposal would be a
potential lawsuit because of the violation of TItle VII. Title VII prohibits
employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national
origin. Another risk for non agreement to the proposal would be Giant Eagle
losing business from transgender and non-binary individuals, as well as losing
employers that identify with these genders. They would also lose business all
around in the long run for making people feel uncomfortable during their
shopping experience knowing that GIant Eagle does not recognize all genders.
