Ir Snsor

This document provides an overview of an infrared sensor. It discusses what an IR sensor is, how it works by emitting and detecting infrared radiation between 0.75-1000μm. It describes the hardware, including an operating voltage of 3-5V and detection range of 2-30cm. The circuit uses an IR LED transmitter and photodiode receiver, and an output is fed to a comparator. Applications include obstacle detection, robotics, and distance measurement. Advantages are low power and simple circuitry, while disadvantages include line of sight requirement and short range.

WHAT IS IR SENSOR

 An infrared sensor is an electronic instrument that is used to sense certain

characteristics of its surroundings. It does this by either emitting or detecting
infrared radiation.

 The infrared waves typically have wavelengths between 0.75 and 1000µm.

 IR SENSOR works as a proximity sensor.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

➢ The principle of an IR sensor working as an

Object Detection Sensor can be explained
using the following figure:
➢ An IR sensor consists of an IR LED and an IR
Photodiode; together they are called as
Photo – Coupler or Opto – Coupler.
➢ When the IR transmitter emits radiation, it
reaches the object and some of the
radiation reflects back to the IR receiver.
Based on the intensity of the reception by
the IR receiver, the output of the sensor is
defined
HARDWARE DESCRIPTION

➢ Operating Voltage: 3.0V – 5.0V

➢ Detection range: 2cm – 30cm (Adjustable
using potentiometer)
➢ Current Consumption : at 3.3V : ~23 mA ,
at 5.0V: ~43 mA
➢ Active output level: Outputs Low logic
level when obstacle is detected
➢ On board Obstacle Detection LED indicator
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

➢ THE TRANSMITTER PART OF THE

SENSOR PROJECT IS IR LED AND
RECIVER PART IS PHOTO DIODE
THE OUTPUT OF THE RECIVER
VARIES DEPENDING UPON ITS
RECEPTION OF IR RAYS.

➢ THIS OUTPUT IS FED TO THE

INPUT OF COMPARATOR.

➢ AND THE SECOND INPUT OF

COMPARATOR IS FED FROM
POTENTIOMETER.
APPLICATION

➢ OBSTACLE DETECTOR

➢ IN ROBOTICS

➢ BRIGHTNESS COMPARISON

➢ DISTANCE MEASUREMENT
PROS AND CONS

ADVANTAGES:
➢ LOW POWER REQUIREMENT

➢ SIMPLE CIRCUITERRY

➢ DIRCETION BEAM

➢ HIGH NOISE IMMUNITY

DISADVANTAGES:
 LINE OF SIGHT REQUIREMENT

 BLOCKED BY COMMON OBJECTS

 SHORT RANGE

 EASILY AFFECTED BY PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
