TOURISM ORGANIZATIONS

1. UNWTO

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible
for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
UNWTO Priorities
Mainstreaming tourism in the global agenda: Advocating the value of tourism as a driver
of socio-economic growth and development, its inclusion as a priority in national and
international policies and the need to create a level playing field for the sector to
develop and prosper.
Improving tourism competitiveness: Improving UNWTO Members’ competitiveness
through knowledge creation and exchange, human resources development and the
promotion of excellence in areas such as policy planning, statistics and market trends,
sustainable tourism development, marketing and promotion, product development and
risk and crisis management.
Promoting sustainable tourism development: Supporting sustainable tourism policies
and practices: policies which make optimal use of environmental resources, respect the
socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and provide socio-economic benefits for
all.
Advancing tourism’s contribution to poverty reduction and development: Maximizing the
contribution of tourism to poverty reduction and achieving the MDGs by making tourism
work as a tool for development and promoting the inclusion of tourism in the
development agenda.
Fostering knowledge, education and capacity building: Supporting countries to assess
and address their needs in education and training, as well as providing networks for
knowledge creation and exchange.
Building partnerships: Engaging with the private sector, regional and local tourism
organizations, academia and research institutions, civil society and the UN system to
build a more sustainable, responsible and competitive tourism sector.

2. OECD

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is variously


referred to as a think tank or monitoring group. Its stated goals include fostering
economic development and cooperation, fighting poverty, and ensuring the
environmental impact of growth and social development is always considered. Over the
years, it has dealt with a range of issues, including raising the standard of living in
member countries, contributing to the expansion of world trade and promoting economic
stability.
OECD-TSA
The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) is a method of measuring the direct economic
contributions of tourism consumption to a national economy. Its unique approach
derives from employing the principles and structure of the internationally-adopted
System of National Ac- counts to measuring the direct economic impact of tourism. It
comprises a unique set of inter-related tables that show the size and distribution of the
different forms of tourism consumption in a country and contributions to gross domestic
product (GDP), national in- come, employment and other macroeconomic measures of
a national economy. While the concept of a satellite account for tour- ism is nearly three
decades old, it was only in early 2008 that two documents exhaustively elaborating the
concepts and data requirements for a TSA were approved by principal international

3. PATA

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is the largest travel promotional organization
in the world. It promotes travel and tourism (Links to an external site.) to and within the
Pacific region.
The objective of the PATA is the promotion and development of tourism, advancement
of the interest of members.
The main objectives of PATA are:

 To promote and develop tourism in the Pacific region.


 To provide timely up-to-date and informed.
 To organize seminars/ conferences for the members.
 Build the business of members.
 To organize training and development programmes for members.
 To promote ethical practices.
 To focus on destination development.
 To take the lead position on travel and tourism industry issues that need to be
addressed.
 To stimulate and develop public-private sector partnership.
 To improve international understanding and international corporation.
 To provide a common forum.
 To publish material relating tourism industry.
 HR development.
 Marketing research and statics.
 To provide valuable insights, forecasts, and analysis help members to make
better business decisions.

4. ASEAN MRA-TP

To ensure growth sustainability and greater contribution to the ASEAN economy, in


further realising ASEAN tourism potential, it needs to be accompanied by excellent
quality of services provided by the tourism industry within the region. Having high-
skilled tourism workers to deliver high-quality services should become normal practice
in order to ensure tourists’ satisfaction visiting the region. One of the ways to achieve
this goal is through mutual recognition of qualifications of tourism professionals across
the AMS.
The purpose of this MRA is to facilitate mobility of tourism professionals within ASEAN
based on competence-based tourism qualifications/certificates, and at the same time,
improve the quality of services delivered by tourism professionals. Currently, there are
32 job titles under the MRA-TP, covering six (6) labour divisions namely Housekeeping,
Front Office, Food Production, Food and Beverages Services, Travel Agencies and
Tour Operation.

5. DOT

The Department of Tourism is responsible for the regulation of the PH Tourism


Industry and the promotion of the Philippines as a tourist destination
The latest improvements in the tourism industry in the country came about with the
passage of Republic Act No. 9593 or the "Tourism Act of 2009."
DOT Attached Agencies
1. Tourism Promotions Board (TPB). The Philippine Conventions and Visitors
Corporation (PCVC) is hereby reorganized as the TPB. The Bureaus for Domestic
and International Tourism Promotions, and the Office of Tourism Information of the
DOT, are hereby absorbed into the TPB.
2. Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA). The Philippine
Tourism Authority (PTA) is reorganized as the TIEZA.
3. Duty-Free Philippines Corporation (DFPC). It shall be a body corporate to
operate the duty-and tax-free merchandising system in the Philippines to augment
the service facilities for tourists and to generate foreign exchange and revenue for
the government. The Duty Free Philippines shall be reorganized to become the
DFPC.
4. Intramuros Administration. (IA)
5. National Parks Development Committee. (NPDC)
6. Nayong Pilipino Foundation. (NPF)
7. Philippine Retirement Authority. (PRA)
8. Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving, (PCSSD) which shall undertake
measures to provide the standard basic dive rules to all levels or kinds of divers,
regulate scuba sports and technical diving in the country and ensure the safety of
the sport through the formulation of policies pursuant thereto, in coordination with
the Office of Tourism Standards and Regulations, including the regulation of the
accredited scuba sports and technical diving establishments.
