Introduction to Test
I-DEAS Tutorials: Test
Learn how to:
• create a test function
• graph a test function
• perform statistical operations

Before you begin...
Prerequisite tutorials:
• Quick Tips to Using Test
2
Setup
If you didn’t start I-DEAS with a new (empty) model
file, open a new one now and give it a unique name.
File
Open
Open Model File form
Model File name: any unique name
OK
Make sure you’re in the following application and task:
Test
Time History
Warning!
If you are prompted by I-DEAS to save your model
file, respond:
No
Save only when the tutorial instructions tell you to--not
when I-DEAS prompts for a save.
If you make a mistake at any time between saves and
can’t recover, you can reopen your model file to the
last save and start over from that point.
Hint
To reopen your model file to the previous save, press
Control-z.

Create a test function 1 of 3
The Design application manipulates parts, Drafting
creates drawings, and Simulation creates finite
element models.
The primary entity created and manipulated in the
Test application is a function.
A function is a list of numbers or functional Y
(ordinate) values paired with X (abscissa) values.
• The X axis is typically time or frequency.
• The Y axis could be any measured quantity such
as displacement, velocity, acceleration, stress, or
some other quantity.
Most often, analog to digital conversion (ADC)
equipment is used to acquire function data in a
laboratory, however, you can also directly create
functions by keying in values of an equation.
This section shows a simple example of keying in
some measurement data so you will be able to
graph it.
4
Create a test function 2 of 3
Assume that during the manufacturing of a part,
statistics are recorded on the number of defects per
lot.
Create a function, keying in the data points for the first
30 manufacturing lots.

Create a test function 3 of 3
Check I-DEAS Prompt.
Key in the following numbers in the I-DEAS Prompt
window.
You can either follow each number or each row
of numbers with a Return.
20 28 18 14 19
17 25 24 19 22
13 17 26 23 21
22 19 26 21 15
23 21 16 19 17
11 15 20 13 18
When finished, terminate the process with another
Return.
Check I-DEAS List.
Notice that the function is stored in your model
file as the first Function Array.

Graph a test function 1 of 2
Functions can be graphed in various formats to
graphically interpret significant meaning from the
data.

In the following sections, you will graph the function
you previously created and then do some simple
statistical analyses to look for stress.

Graph a test function 2 of 2
Graph the function that you just created.

Perform statistical operations 1 of 4
The software contains many tools to help you extract
statistical parameters from test data so you can make
meaningful comparisons of different samples of data.
In this section, you will calculate and list statistics
describing the mean and deviation of the given
function, and then compute a linear regression to
show trends.
9
Perform statistical operations 2 of 4
Compute the standard statistics on this function to
determine the mean and standard deviation.

statistical values.
10
Perform statistical operations 3 of 4
To see the trend, create a second function, which fits
a linear regression line through the data.
