Physical Development
Jackson is currently 35 pounds and about 3’5 (41 inches) give or take a few inches.
According to the article “ How Much Should a 7-year-old Weigh?” it states that the average
weight and height of a 7 year old boy is 50 pounds and 48 inches (Merrill 2020). It’s obvious that
Jackson is both underweight and short compared to someone else his age. Based on the chart
provided on [Link] Jackson is about the height and weight of a 4 year old.
On average a 7 year old is supposed to gain about 5 to 7 pounds a year and 2.5 inches stated in
the article “Your Growing Child | School-Age (6-12 years)” on [Link]. Jackson
likes to spend a lot of his time playing and riding his bike outside. He is active like any other 7
year old but he does very much lack fine coordination as said in “Psychology Applied to
Teaching” (Snow 2015) and does have trouble manipulating his pencil. Over the course of this
observation though it has improved significantly.

EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Jackson’s emotional development coincides very well with what is stated in “Psychology
Applied to Teaching”. Jackson is very sensitive when it comes to many things. Jackson like other
kids may possibly do “Try to express feelings with words, but may resort to aggression when
upset” as listed in the article “ Social and Emotional Skills: What to Expect at Different Ages
(Morin). Jackson throughout the day often says “ I love you” and that can be seen as needing a
sense of reassurance. In the article “My nine-year-old constantly looks for reassurance that we
love him” it’s stated that “While sometimes this is a sign of a deep set insecurity or a lack of
self-acceptance, sometimes it is simply a ritual or a habitual way of seeking attention from their
parents” and I believe that Jackson does it for the latter of reason. Children that are at this age
often are beginning to figure out ways to cope and regulate their emotions and one way they
cope is by crying and crying along with tantrums is a way that Jackson copes. Jackson does
happen to show signs of emotional disturbance; in the article “Emotional Disturbance” on Center
for Parent Information and Resources (2017) states “ Hyperactivity (short attention span,
impulsiveness),Aggression, Withdrawal, Immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums,
poor coping skills), and Learning difficulties (academically performing below grade level) are
symptoms of emotional disturbance.”

Philosophical Development
Jackson’s household are Christians but his home is not based off of the typical
Christiaianty rules. Jackson’s household is more of a right vs wrong household which is your
typical “'Right' is the action that is socially acceptable and in accordance to the social values,
while 'wrong' is a conduct that is adverse to the socially accepted behavior.” (Sherzai 2012).
Jackson takes it very personal when he does something wrong and usually gets very upset and
overwhelmed when he does something wrong.
Jackson is a child who is always trying to stay out of trouble but occasionally gets carried
away with the crowd. There’s a heavy emphasis on doing the right thing in his household and
staying on the right track of doing things.
Jackson does look up to his older brother so he typically looks at him to know right and
wrong and in the article “Brother, Sister, Rival, Friend: How Siblings Shape One Another’s
Lives” i t’s said “ Sibling relationships influence children’s adjustment and development about as
much as parenting does” (Krisch 2019).

Social Development
Jackson is quite a social and interactive child. In social environments Jackson has no
problem expressing himself and interacting with those around him. He is what you would
describe as extrovert, “extroverts enjoy social situations and even seek them out since they enjoy
being around people” (Bainbridge 2020) . Jackson exhibits your typical extrovert traits,
“Sleeping, especially naps, never comes easily, they talk a lot, they love being the center of
attention, they are not shy of sharing emotion, they always want someone to come along with
them to do everything and anything, get bored easily. (Stahl 2018).
Jackson is a child who loves to play with other kids, no matter where he goes he’s able to
find someone to play with. He definitely prefers to play with others versus by himself. From time
to time we do have to remind him it is okay to play alone. Playing alone is actually a very
important thing for a child to do because “ it brings out imagination, creates independent fun,
develops social independence, and allows them to be comfortable alone ( Duncan 2019).At the
beginning of observations Jackson struggled a lot more with playing alone than he does now. At
times now he actually prefers it so he is growing to be more and more socially independent.
Jackson is always a very outgoing person and rarely gets embarrassed. The typical things
any other kid would be embarrassed about Jackson remains very unphased in those situations.

Intellectual Development
Jackson is below the intellectual level of your average 7 year old. Jackson is currently
repeating the first grade due to low test scores last year. Throughout the observation I paid close
attention to try and figure out why he is possibly below level and I was able to quickly realize
that his teachers did not pay close attention and realize that he is a kinesthetic/ writing learner.
According to Houghton College “ kinesthetic-tactile learning style requires that you manipulate
or touch material to learn. Kinesthetic-tactile techniques are used in combination with visual
and/or auditory study techniques, producing multi-sensory learning.” Jackson is someone who
needs to see examples with a variety of materials but he also needs to write them on his own to
fully understand.
Jackson’s strongest subject would be math. He quickly learned his numbers, addition,
along with sequences. Jackson does struggle heavily in the reading and memorization categories.
At the age of 7 children should be able to “ recognize words by sight, re-read sentences to get a
better understanding, connect stories to real world experiences, and continuously improve their
reading skills.” (Morin).
Despite his struggles in school Jackson is capable of a lot. He loves to ask questions and
always likes to know what is going on. Any time Jackson sees something and does not
understand what is going on he does not hesitate to ask questions about it. Many can see this as
annoying but according to article “ When preschoolers ask questions, they want explanations”
Pepsi Case Study 8
they say that “ when kids ask "why" questions, they're not merely trying to prolong conversation,
they're trying to get to the bottom of things.”
Recommendations
Physical Development
Jackson is a bit underweight and it may stem from because he really only cares to eat
breakfast. In order to fix this he is going to need to eat 3 meals a day and eat a decent amount
from each meal. [Link]
Emotional Development
Jackson is a very emotional and sensitive which there is nothing wrong with but there
should be better ways implemented to handle his emotion such as counting or breathe
techniques. [Link]

Philosophical Development
Jackson so far is very good at right and wrong. The only thing we can do is continue to
communicate right and wrong while also giving a good example.

Social Development
Jackson’s social development so far is good but there needs to be more work on
practicing independence.

Intellectual Development
Jackson is below grade level but it’s only because he needs more work in his learning
style. That help can be provided at school but definitely at home. Along with more one on one

learning he will do just fine.
