Final Project: Writing Portfolio

Purpose: A writing portfolio is a collection of your work that you’ve completed during a semester, a
year, or even a lifetime. Portfolios show a few different things: how you have grown and developed as a
writer, show work that you are proud of and what you’ve taken away from this semester, and what you
will use in the future.

Task: This semester portfolio is your chance to show how you have grown in certain areas of your
writing during your time in this course. You will have a chance to write a reflective essay that gives you a
chance to really think about what you learned about yourself as a writer.

Instructions: Student writing portfolios will include:

❖ A minimum of three discussion board posts completed throughout the semester.

❖ Essay #1: Narrative
❖ Essay #2: Compare and Contrast
❖ Essay #3: Argumentative / Persuasive
❖ A reflective essay synthesizing what you have learned about the writing process through
essay 1, 2, and 3 in this course.
To be followed up with a 5-7 minute presentation of the portfolio on the last day of class.

Audience: Audience goes beyond the college instructor for the course, the audience should be directed
towards your colleagues and your future self.

Format or Genre: Writing portfolio displaying written work and progress of students in first year
composition.

Assessment Criteria: Student portfolios will be assessed for five requirements: three published
discussion board posts, narrative essay, compare and contrast essay, argumentative/persuasive essay, and
reflective essay. Each requirement’s presence on the portfolio will be assessed 20 points each. The
reflective essay will have its own criteria and is elaborated below.

Reflective essay: This is a five to six page essay that reflects on your progress as a writer during this
semester. Your essay is written to a general audience (beyond your instructor) and should include but is
not limited to:

➢ Description of the contents of your portfolio: What was the purpose of each work? Talk
about what each piece of writing does really well and what perhaps doesn’t work as well.
➢ Explanation of your choices: why do these pieces of writing represent your best work?
➢ Reflection on your strengths and abilities as a writer: What have you learned about
writing? What problems have you encountered, and how have you solved them?

Due @ 11:59 p.m. during finals week.
