*CALL TO WORSHIP Dr. Steve Pulliam

Pastor: On this second Sunday of Advent,
we light the second purple candle of the Advent wreath
as a symbol of Christ the Way.
People: May the Word sent from God through the prophets
lead us to the way of salvation.
All: O come, O come, Emmanuel!

*OPENING HYMN 196 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus HYFRYDOL

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.
2. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.

SPEAK

INVITATION TO REPENTANCE Dr. Steve Pulliam

Prepare the way of the Lord!
Let us make our confession to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON

Lord, we have not kept watch for you, nor listened for your voice.
We have occupied ourselves with our own concerns.
We have not noticed the needs of people around us,
nor acknowledged the love that has been shown to us.
Forgive us for our lack of watchfulness.
Help us to wait to know your will.
Help us to look out for the needs of others.
Help us to work, watch, and listen for your coming. Amen.
GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERING

OFFERTORY SOLO Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming arr. David Maddux
Dennese Adkins, soprano

*DOXOLOGY 95 OLD 100th

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.
Praise him, all creatures here below.
Praise him above, ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The pastor gives thanks, remembering God’s acts of salvation, and concludes:
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,
We praise your name and join their unending hymn:

The pastor continues the thanksgiving and concludes:

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

The pastor invokes the present work of the Holy Spirit and then praises the Trinity, concluding:
All honor is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever:

TAKING THE BREAD AND CUP

COMMUNION MUSIC O Come, O Come, Emmanuel arr. Jay Rouse

Frode Gundersen, piano

RECEIVING PRAYER & INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

*CLOSING HYMN 203 Hail to the Lord’s Anointed ELLACOMBE
1. Hail to the Lord's Anointed, great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free;
to take away transgression, and rule in equity.
2. He comes with succor speedy to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight.
3. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth.
Before him, on the mountains, shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains, from hill to valley flow.
4. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever; that name to us is love.
