Design of Compound Wall

The document summarizes the design of a compound wall including calculations of wind load, earth pressure, self-weight, footing size, overturning moment, and soil bearing capacity. The compound wall is 2.5m high with a 3m column spacing. Calculations show the wall's resisting moment of 8.8 ton-meters exceeds the overturning moment of 3.87 ton-meters, resulting in a factor of safety of 2.273. Additionally, the net pressure on the soil of 3.01 ton/square-meter is less than the soil's bearing capacity of 5 ton/square-meter. Therefore, the compound wall is determined to be safe against overturning and the soil can adequately support the pressure.

DESIGN OF COMPOUND WALL

Basic wind velocity Vb = 47 m/s

k1 = 0.9
Terrain Category 1
Class A
k2 = 1.05
k3 = 1
Design Wind velocity Vd 44.42 m/s
Design Wind Pressure Pd 1183.9 N/sqm

Height of Compound wall = H= 2.5 m

Depth of foundation of C wall = 2.05 m
Spacing of columns of C wall = 3 m

Exposed area of C wall to wind= 3 mx 2.5 m

= 7.5 sqm
Wind Force= 1183.9 N/sqm x 7.5 sqm = 0.89 T
Wind Force acts at 3.3 m above Fdn
Moment due to Wind force = 2.93 Tm

Earth Pressure
Height of earth retained = 0.8 m
Pressue due to earth pressure = 0.48 T/sqm
Force due to earth pressure 0.57 Tons
Moment due to earth pressure 0.94 Tm

Dead Load due to Compound Wall

Height of brick in Compound wall = H= 2.2 m
width of compound wall = 0.23 m
Wt of Brick wall above plinth beam = 2.88 T

size of plinth beam = 0.23 m x 0.3 m

Wt of plinth beam = 0.50 T
Wt of grade beam = 0.50
Wt of tie beam = 0.50

Total Selfwt of Compound Wall = 4.37 T

Add wt of barbed wire fence = 0.3 T
Total weight of compound wall on foundation = 4.67 T

width toe stem heel thickness

Footing Size= 1.2 0.4 0.3 1 0.3 m thick
Footing weight = 1.47 T

Total Weight on Soil = 6.14 T

Overturning Moment due to Wind & Earth pressure
2.93 Tm + 0.94 Tm = 3.87 Tm

Resisting moment due to self wt = 2.57103 Tm + 1.248 Tm

Resisting moment due to self wt = = 3.820 Tm

Weight of soil on heel of footing = 1.2 sqm X 1.75 m X 1.8 T/cum

= 3.78 T
Resisting moment due to soil wt = 3.78 T x 1.2 m
= 4.980 Tm

Total Resisting moment = 8.800 Tm Vs Overturning Mom= 3.87 Tm

FOS for OT = 2.273

Hence, the compound wall is safe against overturning.

SBC of SOIL = 5 T/sqm

Pressure on soil = 6.14 T / ( 1.2 m x 1.7 m )

Net pressure = 3.01 T/sqm

Hence, the pressure is less than SBC.

Note: weight of soil is not considered in Net SBC.
