Introduction

CBEAR
A Microcomputer Program for
Bearing Capacity Analysis of Foundations

INTRODUCTION

The total load, QUIt! which can be safely applied to a footing is a function of the ultimate
bearing capacity, quit. Analysis of the bearing capacity of footing foundations is an
important part of the design of shallow foundations for bridges and other structures.

To determine the bearing capacity, geotechnical engineers usually rely on the theory of
plasticity. This theory assumes the soil mass to be of semi-infinite extent, homogeneous, and
its behavior is characterized as follows:

• Shear strength properties qefined by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria.

• Stress-strain behavior is of a rigid plastic solid.

The general problem can be posed as an infinite strip of width B resting on a soil mass at a
depth D, where D s B. The problem is usually simplified by neglecting any shearing
contribution of the overburden soil (above the bearing level) and can be formulated as
illustrated in figure 1.

1
CBEAR-Bearing Capacity Analysis of Shallow Foundations-Users Manual

The first solutions after Prandtl (1921) and Reissner (1924) indkate that the general failure
pattern should consist of three zones. Zone I is an active Rankine Zone, which pushes the
radial Prandtl Zone II sideways and the passiv,e Rankine Zone III in an upward direction.

Terzaghi (1943) presents the following solution:

qult = Quit
B
= eN
c
+qNq +.!.2 yBN
y
(1)

where q = yD and N e , N q, and Ny are bearing capacity factors dependent only on the angle
of internal friction. .

Subsequent solutions by Meyerhof (1963), Hansen (1970), and Vesic (1975) consider the
effects of foundation geometry, embedment, inclined and eccentric loads, and sloping
grotuld surface.

This report introduces an IBM/PC/XT microcomputer program for general bearing

capacity analysis of shallow foundations. Strip, rectangular, and square fOtuldations can be
analyzed, and the effects of foundation embedment, inclined and eccentric loads, sloping
grotuld surface, and surcharge are considered. The program incorporates the general
bearing capacity equations and factors, as suggested by Meyerhof (1963) and Vesic (1975).
The report presents the equations used by the program and examples of the capabilities of
the user-friendly data entry screens.

The program is coded in Turbo Pascal 4.0 and takes full advantage of the stand-alone (single
user) characteristics of the IBM-PC. The program uses "friendly" input data entry through"
full screen editing procedures and input checking routines. .

The code contains parts of both the main frame and microcomputer program CBEAR, which
was developed by the Automatic Data Processing Center of the US. Army Engineer
Waterways Experiment Station.

BEARING CAPACITY FACTORS

The bearing capacity factors used in the program are those derived by Meyerhof (1963) and
Vesic (1975). Table 1 summarizes the bearing capacity factors as defined by these authors.

Introduction

CORRECTION FACTORS

Figure 1 shows an assumed failure condition for the specific condition [Link] applied
load, horizontal geometry of footing and ground, and the length, L, is infinitely long. The
bearing capacity factors Ne, N q, and Ny are directly affected by changes to loading and
footing or ground geometry. The bearing capacity equation is modified by correction factors
to account for. actual loading and soil conditions that differ from those assumed to derive
equation land asillustrated in figure 1. The correct:ionfactors usedin CBEAR account for:

a. Foundation shape
b. Foundationembedment
c. Load inclination and eccentricity
d. Tilt of base
e.. Ground slope.

Tables 2 ahd 3 summarize the expressions for the correction factors according to Meyerhof
(1963) and Vesic (1975), and figure 2 depicts situations of foundation embedment, load

inclination, tilt of base, and a footing with a sloped ground surface. Refer to the publications
by these authors for detailed descriptions and examples of the conditions influenced by
these factors.

Foundation dimension for eccentric loads is adjusted according to Meyerhof (1963). The
effective foundation width for a strip footing is given by (see figure 3A):
B'=B-2e B (3)

For rectangular footings, the effective foundation dimensions are (see figure 3B):

B'=B-2e B
L' =L -2e L (4)

For eccentric loading, use the effective width and the effective length for the calculation of
the bearing capacity factors except those for embedment.

Introduction

INTERACTIVE DATA ENTRY AND OUTPUT RESULTS

Use input screens and menus to enter the necessary data for the analysis. An input screen is'
a graphical display defining the data to be entered and an area to prompt the user for the
data. Use menus to select the entry of optional data and to control program operation.

The output of the program is complete but compact. It includes an [Link] ofthe input
data and a screen that shows analysis results. This screen reports the effective base '
dimensions for the footing, a summary of bearing capacity factors, and the resulting bearing
capacity from the combined effect of these factors: The summary of bearing capacity factors
contains values for bearing capacity, shape, embedment, inclination, base tilt, and ground
slope factors. .

EFFECT OF GROUND WATER TABLE

Case I. The ground water table is located between the ground surface and the bottom of the
footing a s d < D. . . .. . .

The effective overburden pressure, q = D} y + D 2 (y sal - Y water)

Where D} =Distance from ground surface to ground water table

D 2 = Distance from ground water to bottom of footing

Case II. The water table is at the bottom of the footing or located between the bottom of the .
footing and a distance equal to the foundation width as measured from the bottom of the
foundation (D s d s B + D).

The effective overburden pressure, q =Y D

The in the third term of the bearing capacity equation will be replaced with
Y = Y / + (d/B) x (y - Y ')

where y /= Ysal - Ywater

Case III. The depth to the ground water table (d) is greater than or equal to the width of the
foundation (B), measured from the bottom of the footing. The water table has no effect and
no correction is necessary.

Appendix A contains a compilation of all the CBEAR computer screens, and appendix B
presents five example runs with hand computations and the actual input screens and menus
found in the program for each example.

The program computes the bearing capacity for continuous (spread) and rectangular
(square) footings. Select these options by pressing the space bar key or the Alt-M key
combination to display the menu options.

The objective of the visual aid at the right side of the input screen is to guide the user in the
input process. It does not represent the actual (scale, size, etc.) geometry of the footing.

15
CBEAR-Bearing Capacity Analysis of Shallow. Foundations-Users Manual

Providing the coordinates for points (xl, y1) and (x2, y2) determines the width and the
inclination of the footing base. If y1 = y2, the footing base is not inclined. The next screen
show a typical input screen for a continuous footing with width B = 10 ft (Because y1 = y2 =
0.0 ft, the base is not inclined in this example.) .

Must interpolate value for y because water level is less than base width from bottom of
footing. Therefore:

y = (120 - 62.4) + ~ [120 - (120 - 62.4)] = 95.04 pcf

10

c.1 According to Meyerhof, 1963

qult = 1 x 1.333 x 0.79 x 0.738 x 0.530 x 500 x 25.805 +
1 x 1.166 x 0.79 x 0.756 x 0.562 x 1,746.26 x 14.721 +

~
1 x 1.166 x 0.413 x 0.756 x 0.562 x
2 r
x 95.04 x 8 x 11.191

(Note that footing is eccentric)

qlilt = 5,314.5 + 10060.7 + 870.4
qlllt = 16,245.6= 16.25 psf

c.2 According to Vesic, 1975

qlilt = 1 x 1.321 x 1 x 0.738 x 0.530 x 500 x 25.805 +
+ 1 x 1.299 x 1 x 0.756 x 0.562 x 1,746.26 x 14.721 +

+ 1 x 1 x 1 x 0.756 x 0.562x ~ x 95.04 x 8.0 x 16.718

2
qlllt = 6,666.6 + 14,187.7 + 2,700.3
quit = 23,554.6 psf = 23.55 ksf
