AI Innovations in Space Exploration

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in space exploration by analyzing satellite images, autonomously tracking satellites to avoid collisions, and solving complex problems. AI programs can now measure asteroid properties without human intervention. AI assistants on the International Space Station help astronauts. For a 2033 mission to Mars, NASA is challenging architects to design 3D printed habitats that can be built autonomously on Mars, accounting for the planet's toxic atmosphere, lack of water, and cold temperatures. One finalist is using AI and generative design to simulate building processes and test millions of design options in a virtual Martian environment to optimize for factors like strength, insulation, and material use.

Abstract:

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing human life on Earth. AI is efficient in making the daily routine
tasks, but its applications are well beyond the Earth in space exploration. Today, AI is changing the space
industry by analyzing the millions of images captured by the satellites and using it for weather and
climate changes and urban planning. AI algorithms can track satellites autonomously and avoid collisions
with other satellites by doing motion planning. Neural Networks allow systems to learn by themselves
over time and solve highly complex problems in space exploration. In 2017 NASA collaborated with
Google and worked on AI algorithms for space exploration, which eventually explored the two
exoplanets. Asteroid shapes, spin rates, and sizes are measured autonomously using the AI programs
today without any human intervention. AI-based assistants, for instance, CIMON-1 and CIMON-2 sent to
International Space Station, are used to help astronauts in answering their questions and fly around in
exploring space. AI-based robotic astronauts might replace human astronauts in the near future, saving
much money and overcoming human life risks in space missions. In short, AI is most relevant than ever
in space exploration today.

Case Study 1:

3D printed habitat Challenge:

NASA is planning to send humans to Mars by 2033. Astronauts in Mars would eventually need a
habitat to live on red planet. To do so, NASA has an open challenge named 3-D printed habitat challenge
for architects and engineers to design such habitat that can be built autonomously on planet Mars. Let’s
put some facts in place, the air at Mars is toxic cocktail of mostly carbon dioxide, there is absence of
water and low gravity which is about 37.6 percent that of Earth. Climate varies from -50 to -200
Fahrenheit. The challenge is to design such habitat which can sustain in such changing environments.

AI as space architect:

The challenge finalist David with AI space factory designed a robot which simulated the building process
of habitat on Mars. AI through ‘generative design’ has allowed them to study millions of architectural
designs comparing each with one another for finding the optimal one. It is more like making machines
learn what architects do. A virtual Martian environment is simulated and different designs are tested
which AI algorithms compare and predict their functioning in the environment. The functions include
structural strength, thermal insulation or reducing the amount of raw materials.
