Description
Permacrib® is Phi Group NZ Ltd’s structurally engineered walling system, which utilizes the long established gravity wall concept. The patented
lightweight interlocking crib components form a series of open cell modules. These are then filled with well graded stone to the mass required to
counteract the earth pressures and surcharge loadings. Structural integrity is achieved through the interaction of the crib elements and the granular
infill.
Application
Permacrib is ideally suited to a broad range of retaining applications, from simple landscaping walls to major civil engineering retaining structures in
excess of 15 metres high. Permacrib also provides integrated facings for reinforced earth, anchored, rock bolted and soil nailed structures. To take
full advantage of Permacrib’s exceptional acoustic properties, a range of free standing Noise Barrier walls have been developed.
Manufacture
Permacrib is manufactured in New Zealand from Radiata Pine selected from managed, sustainable, renewable plantation forest resources.
Manufacturing is carried out to an approved QA system ensuring a high level of dimensional accuracy. All machining is done before treatment, which
ensures that complete wood cell penetration is achieved, giving full protection from termite and fungal attack.
Durability
Permacrib components are H5 treated to international standards using CCA preservatives. ACQ treatment options are also available. All Permacrib
components carry a NZ industry standard 50 year warranty against fungal decay and termite attack. International testing and certification includes
British Board of Agrément approval for an in ground service life in excess of 125 years (BBA Certificate No.95/3115).
Attractive Appearance - Award Winning Architectural Structures
Permacrib’s natural timber and stone face offers a much softer and more natural aesthetic finish than other concrete, block, wire mesh or stone
retaining systems. Kopupaka Reserve in NZ features two stunning architecturally designed Permacrib pond structures, complete with paint stained
Polynesian motifs. The structures were shortlisted from just 10 worldwide landscape projects for the prestigious 2016 World Architecture Festival
Awards held in Germany.
Proven Earthquake Seismic Performance
On 22 February 2011 Christchurch was hit by a massive earthquake which has been described as a 1 in 2000 year event. Very few multi-storey
buildings survived intact, 185 people were killed and several thousand were injured. The NZ Reserve Bank estimates the total construction cost of
the Christchurch rebuild to be approximately NZ$40 billion. For more than 20 years Christchurch had been Permacrib’s largest NZ domestic market.
After the earthquake a comprehensive photographic survey of the more than 80 Permacrib walls in Christchurch revealed an overwhelming majority
performed extremely well, even though most of them were not required to include seismic design at the time they were constructed. By 2016 a
further 70 Permacrib walls were designed, approved and constructed in Christchurch.

Environmentally Sustainable Green Solution
Environmentally Sustainable
Permacrib® is manufactured entirely from NZ plantation grown Radiata pine forests, which are a managed renewable sustainable resource
where the rate of harvest is less than the rate of growth and re-planting.
Mitigation of Greenhouse Effects
Trees are the lungs of the earth - absorbing CO2 and converting it to oxygen. As mature trees absorb less CO2, by harvesting and re-planting
with young specimens a constant cycle of CO2 absorption is ensured. Treated Permacrib timber has an indefinite life span (in excess of 125
years) and its use effectively locks away carbon which under normal circumstances would be released into the atmosphere in a period of 30
years. Manufacture and construction is simple and requires very low levels of energy.
Outstanding Noise Absorption
Permacrib’s open stone/timber structure provides outstanding noise absorption abilities. On projects close to roads and residential
neighbourhoods, Permacrib walls very effectively absorb incoming noise which would otherwise be reflected back by concrete or stone
retaining wall options.
Vegetative Planting
To further enhance Permacrib’s natural attractive appearance, permanent planting directly into
the wall face can be readily achieved using topsoil filled geotextile planter bags.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organization established in 1993
to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management
of the world’s forests. Phi Group NZ Ltd
has international Forest Stewardship
Council Certification (FSC-C084307)
which supports the environmental
sustainability of our products from
forest to completed project.
