Atterberg Limits Testing Procedure

This document provides an overview of procedures to determine the Atterberg limits of a soil sample, which are used to classify soils and understand their engineering properties. The two key limits tested are the liquid limit, where a soil transitions from a plastic to liquid state, and the plastic limit, where it transitions from semi-solid to plastic. To find the liquid limit, a soil paste is grooved and the number of blows to close the groove at different moisture contents is recorded. The plastic limit is the moisture content where a soil thread crumbles to 1/8 inch in diameter when rolled. Plotting the moisture contents versus blows allows determining the numerical liquid and plastic limits.

EXPERIMENT NO.

4
ATTERBERG LIMITS

Object

1. To determine the Atterberg limits (Liquid limit and Plastic limit) of a soil sample.

Scope
2. The Atterberg limits of a soil are used to obtained general information about a
soil and its strength, compressibility, permeability, shrinkage and swell properties of
soil.. These are also use for classification of soil and making construction
specifications.
Apparatus
3. Liquid limit device (Casagrande Apparatus), grooving tools, balance, spatula.
evaporating dish, containers, oven, No.40 sieve.

Procedure

4. The procedure for the test is as fol:

a. Liquid Limit (LL)

(1) Take 250 gm of soil sample passing through No.40 sieve. Place
about 250 gm of soil sample in a dish. Add water very slowly and
using spatula, mix the soil thoroughly until it becomes a thick
paste. Be careful not to add to much water.

(2) Place a portion of the soil paste in a cup and by means of spatula
level and smooth the surface of soil paste.

(3) Cut a clean, straight groove m the paste by drawing grooving tools.
This
groove must be 3/8 in at the bottom.

(4) Turn the crank of the liquid limit device at the rate of two
blows/sec, and count the number of blows until the two parts of
soil come into contact at the bottom of the groove along a
distance of 0.5 inch.

(5) Take about 20 to 40 gm sample of paste from the closed part of

the groove for moisture content.

(6) Repeat steps 3, 4,5 and 6 at least 4 times using the same soil
sample to which further small increment of water has been added.
(7) The test should always proceed from the drier to the wetter
condition.

b. Plastic Limit (PL)

(1) Take about 20 gm of soil passing No.40 sieve. Mix water to make it
plastic enough to be shaped into a ball.

(2) Take about 8 gm of the plastic soil, make a ball of it and roll it
between the palm and the glass plate with just sufficient pressure
to roll the mass into a
thread of uniform dia of 1/8 in (3mm) through out its length.

(3) Continue the process until the thread just crumbles at 1/8 in dia.

(4) Collect the crumbled soil thread in the container for moisture
content determination.

(5) Repeat the procedure for 3 to 4 times.

Observations and Data Collection

5. The observations to be taken during the test are shown on the Data Sheet.

Computations and Inter pretation of Results

6.Plot graph between the moisture content along the ordinate versus the NO. of blows
Along the abscissa and draw the best fitting straight line among them . the moisture
Content corresponding to 25 blows is the liquid limits of the soil. The moisture
content
at which the thread of the plastic limit of soil.
