VARIETY SHOW

Variety show , also known as


variety arts or variety
entertainment, is entertainment
made up of a variety of acts
including musical
performances, sketch comedy,
magic, acrobatics, juggling,
and ventriloquism. It is
normally introduced by a compère
(master of
ceremonies)
or host. The
variety format made its
way from Victorian era stage to radio
and then television. Variety shows were
a staple of anglophone television from the late 1940s into the
1980s.
Variety shows are a huge part of daily life in the
Philippines, with all of the major networks running their
own variety shows usually during lunchtime and can be
on the air for between one and a half hours to three hours.
The most notable Philippine
variety show is the longest-running
Eat Bulaga, which premiered in
1979 and has aired on RPN, ABS-
CBN, and GMA Network in the
succeeding years. Recently many other TV networks are
different formats of variety. It's Showtime has shown
great popularity and interest to Filipino viewers.

Variety shows had become mainstays of the noontime

GMA and ABS-CBN airs two
noontime shows in a week: a
weeklong (Monday to Saturday)
noontime show and a Sunday
noontime show. GMA Network
has Eat Bulaga! and Sunday PinaSaya on its lineup, while
It's Showtime and ASAP air on ABS-CBN.
Student Canteen was the first noontime variety show on Philippine television. It
was originally a radio show on DZXL that was brought to CBN in 1958. It was
hosted by Eddie Ilarde, Bobby Ledesma, Leila Benitez, and Bobby de Veyra. The
pioneer noontime show ended in 1965 when Ilarde went to politics. It was
succeeded by several noontime shows until its comeback in 1975.

Bulaga! is a Philippine television variety


show broadcast by GMA Network.
Produced by Television And Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE), it is the longest
running noontime show in the Philippines. It premiered on July 30, 1979, and
being filmed from APT Studios, along Marcos Highway in Cainta, Rizal. The
show is also aired worldwide through GMA Pinoy TV and live streaming online on
YouTube (except the BOOM! segment due to copyright issues from its franchise
distributor Keshet International).[1] The name approximately translates to
"Lunchtime Surprise!".[2]

It's Showtime (formerly known as Showtime and Magpasikat) is a


Philippine noontime variety show that premiered on October 24, 2009, on ABS-
CBN. The show broadcasts from the ABS-CBN Studios at the ABS-CBN
Broadcasting Center in Quezon City. The show airs Weekdays from 12:15 pm to
3:45 pm, Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm, with an encore telecast on Jeepney
TV every Monday-Saturday from 8:15-11:00 pm starting on June 11.[1] The show
also broadcast worldwide through TFC or known
as The Filipino Channel and live streaming online
on YouTube via its channel Showtime Online
Universe.
It's Showtime is the second live entertainment
program in the Philippines to be broadcast in high-
definition, after ASAP Natin' To, sports programs
and various shows. It's Showtime is also ABS-
CBN's longest running daily noontime variety show after overtaking the length of
MTB (1998–2005) on its 9th anniversary In 2018.
