MODULE 6
Solutions of General Linear Homogeneous Equations
The form of a general linear homogeneous differential equation with constant
coefficients is given by
This form may also be written in a compact form as ( ) where ( ) is linear
differential operation.
In particular, we have seen in module 2 the form of the linear first order differential
equation , where is constant. This equation has the exponential
solution . We can also define the second order homogeneous differential
equation as .
Theorem: If is a root of the equation ( ) then
( ) ( )
The above theorem asserts that is a solution of ( ) . In general, we
have the solution as , constant. We define ( ) as the auxiliary
equation.
The roots of the auxiliary equation is classified into 4 cases”
Case 1: Distinct Real Roots
Case 2: Repeated Real Roots
Case 3: Distinct Imaginary Roots
Case 4 Repeated Imaginary Roots

Property of and for the exclusive use of SLU. Reproduction, storing in a retrieval system, distributing, uploading or posting online, or transmitting in any form or by any
means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise of any part of this document, without the prior written permission of SLU, is strictly prohibited. 1
The last equation asserts that the auxiliary equation has only one root , which
leads to a contradiction of repeated roots.
Multiplying both sides of the given differential equation by gives

If we let and ( ) , where are new arbitrary constants,

( ) (2)
Thus, to determine the solution of a homogeneous differential equation with
imaginary roots of the auxiliary equation, we need to find the values of , and
substitute it in (2)
For example, the equation ( ) has roots for its auxiliary equation.
