TOEFL Speaking Test Format Guide

The speaking section of the TOEFL test takes 25-30 minutes to complete. It consists of 3 parts that assess test takers' use of spoken English. Test format – Speaking 


25- 30 minutes

The speaking section assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.
There will be two sections:
1. Reviewing comprehension about writing (15 minutes)

2. Speaking Test
 Part 1 - the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range
of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part
lasts between four and five minutes.
1 Let’s talk about your home town or village.
- What kind of place is it?
- What’s the most interesting part of your town/village?
- What kind of jobs do the people in your town/village do?
- Would you say it’s a good place to live? (Why?)

Let’s move on to talk about accommodation.


- Tell me about the kind of accommodation you live in?
- How long have you lived there?
- What do you like about living there?
- What sort of accommodation would you most like to live in?
Describe something you own which is very important to you.

You should say:

- Where you got it from

- How long you have had it

- What you use it for

And explain why it is important to you.


Let’s consider first of all how’s people’s values have changed.

- What kind of things give status to people in your country?

- Have things changed since your parents’ time?

Finally, let’s talk about the role of advertising.

- Do you think advertising influences what people buy?


 Part 2  - you will be given a particular topic to talk about. You will have one
minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will
then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
 Part 3 - you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These
will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This
part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.
