Specify the requirements for @ decorative and functional, electroplated finish on ferrous
pars from for metal stamping and machined components. Basic requirements are covered
for barel or rack electro-deposited zine allows over a ferrous substrate.
“The coating system must be fee of hexavalent chromium, with no hexavalent chromium in
the final product. Also, materials of eadmium (a zinc substitute), mercury and lead shall
rot be use.
‘Specific requirements shown onthe pat drawing shall take precedence over related
requirements specified inthis standard, or may be considered as additional requirements to
‘this standard
'A clean, commercial finish with complete plate coverage is required onal visible
‘Senificant surfaces of the pat. The plating shal be smooth and fre from stains,
discoloration, blisters, pts, nodules, roughness, crack, or any other defect that impairs
the appearance and protective value ofthe plating, Coverage shall be uniform in
appearance and compete except in deep recesses or sal diameter holes.
Range of cob, rescence, opaqueness, and sheen are normally nt ertizal unless
specitid. Speife colors shall be uniform, ihtly adherent, hard and dry
CChromate coatings may exhibit smal bare spots on edge projections asa result of bulk
handling damage. Such bare spots are nota cause for rejection.
3.0_COMPOSITION

This standard specifies the requirements fora corrosion resistant coating system which
consists ofa trivalent chromium coating ona zine substrate, or siniar coating consisting
ff topcoat witha sacrificial basecoat, which is applied electrically to the base metal and
‘cured through a heat treatment process
4.0__ SURFACE COVERAGE
4.1 A minimum coating thickness is not required ithe costed pats meet this standard

‘maximum of coating which may be applied to these arcas shall be limited bythe basic
thread or feature size as specified on the product drawings. Dimensional adjustments are
permitted, during the machining proces, as to assure thal these as coated dimensions are
maintained,
Dimensions relating to surfaces which wil subsequently be press-fitted in assembly (ie
diameters for bearing, clutch, and knur, et.) shall ot be modified or adjusted. Such
dimensions shall be maintained peor tothe coating aplication.

‘The thickness ofthe plated finish shall be determines by microscopic examination of cross
sections taken perpendicular to significant surfaces, or by other methods agreed upon by
the supplier and purchases.
‘The following ASTM Standard Methods are recommended for determining the costing
thiokness: oo
8) ASTM B-487, Microscopie Cross Section,
b) ASTM B-499, Magnetic Method,
©) ASTM B-505, Coulometric Method,
{) ASTM B:568, X-Ray Method.
Except forthe microscopic method, calibrate the test instrument using the same coating as
the being measured. Magnetic instruments should be zeroed on an unplated part ofthe
‘same kd asthe coating i deposited on,
‘Thickness to be advised by supplier to meet the mechanical properties defined in this
specification and/or given inthe drawing, andor listed in the purchase order. Primary
‘considerations to achieve the corrosion protection rated for the part
Supplementary treatments suchas ols, waxes or other specified coatings are not
applicable to thickness measurements.
Tolerances specified on drawings are the fina dimensions unless otherwise indicate.
Allowance for plating built-up must be made in the dimensions of threaded fasteners.

Alkaline Cleaning: Light ols may be removed by soaking parts in a heater alkaline
‘leaner, Flectrocleaning, with parts made anodic (positive polarity), may also be use.
Part subject to hydrogen embritlement shall not be cleaned eathodcaly (negative
polarity),
ust and Scale Removal: ‘The prefered procedures forthe removal or heat seale or rust
on high strength or high hardness parts are tumbling, vibatory finishing, or blasting with
‘fine abrasive. Alkaline rust remover and de-sealrs may also be used
‘Acid Cleaning: Acid cleaning isthe least desirable ofthe available cleaning methods for
hardened stel parts because of ean contribute to hydrogen embritlement. Consequently,
if fasteners or hardened ste parts with a Rockwell Hardness of HRC-31 or greater are
‘acid cleaned, iti required that an inhibited, maximum of S-perceat sulfuric acid hasod ack
‘be used and the parts liited to 2 maximum of 10 minutes of exposure. Controls must be
implemented and records must be kept on the type and strength ofthe inhibitor. Steps
‘must also be taken to remove the parts from the acid bath during plant shutdown due to
‘mechanical power failure in es than the 10 minutes maximum acid exposure time.
Post Treatment after Plating: Ifthe parts are plated in an alkaline bath aS to 10 second
immersion ina 0.S-percent by volume nitric acid solution is recommended for neutralizing
any residue, aaa

shall be rejected ifrust spots exceed the following limitations:
(On pars with surfaces area greater than 15S square-centimetcrs (24 square inches), the
appearance of six oF mare rast spots each 185 square-centimeter (24 squae inches) of
seniicamt surface;
(On pars smaller than 153 square-centimeters (24 squat inches), the appearance of more

In contact with other metal components or sinlar components (i shipping and handing),
scratches should not be visually apparent.
Scribe Test: To a certain surfice hardness to check for rust creep after exposure to sat
spray at least 24 hours acording the ASTM B-117.
Hardness: Pencil hardness = H ~2H range,
ASTMB:57I Test: The deposit shall not pee! from itseior ftom the substrate when
tested in accordance with ASTM B-S71 (standard test methods for adhesion of metallic
coatings). The hardened, aged (for 24 hours) chromate coating shall be tightly adherent to
the plated coating and shall not be removed by ordi ing.

Joosely adherent metalic particles. The test tape is then applid to a clean, whitepaper for
viewing. Evidence oflose particles adhering othe tape sal result in rejection ofthe
centre lot of parts.
[SAE Adhesion Tast: Adhesion may be determined by scooping the surface or shearing
‘with a sharp edge, knife, or razor through the plating down tothe basis metal and
‘examining four diameters magnification for evidence of non-adhesion. Alternately the
“nile or specimen may be clamped ina vise and the projecting portion ben back and
fourth until rupture occurs. I the edge ofthe ruptured plating can be peeled back or if
separation between the plating and the bass metal can be seen atthe point of rupture
‘when examined at four dismeters magnification, adhesion isnot satisfactory
