Low-Budget Music Video Analysis

The document summarizes and compares three music videos with low budgets from emerging artists: 1) RIELL's "stubborn" music video, filmed in one location (an abandoned house) with basic props, suggesting a low budget as an early release when she had low recognition. 2) Missio's "bottom of the deep blue see" includes two locations and uses mid/long shots and direct address to the audience relating to the lyrics. It was also an early release with lower recognition at the time. 3) Aviva's "Grrrls" was filmed on a suburban street, implying a low budget. Tracking shots follow her throughout contradicting the lyrics where she claims to not sing along

RIELL- stubborn music video.

RIELL consists of one main setting with minor clips of other areas (an abandoned house). She uses
basic props/setting which could suggest that it is a low budget, linear narrative of a music video.
RIELL is based on YouTube which is part of new media as she also casts blogs based on her new
upcoming songs. This song was an early release on her YouTube channel which can suggest that she
had low recognition/viewers, which reflects on the budget for her music video, despite of this her
currently status reflects on her newest video ‘first’ that has three settings and shows the use of a
higher budget. Throughout the video RIELL does not use any forms of direct address but uses a few
two shots, mid shots and long shots despite only filming in one setting. But without using effect
RIELL was able to construct narrative by showing two versions of herself within the same room
which shows a plot and clear construction over where the artist is positioned in the room.

All these artists are based towards the new generation with use of new media, like blogs and
websites to catch up with the artists new songs and events. All of them are based and have had
recognition on YouTube, that is a great form of accessibility and interactivity that these artists can
have with the audience like events and live streams.

Missio- bottom of the deep blue see music video

This again is a low budget music video that include two settings. Camera angles such as mid shots
and long shots are consistently used throughout with the occasional tracking shot, the chorus often
portrays the main singer using direct address towards the audience which often has a similar relation
towards the lyrics of the song such as part of the main chorus. ‘still don't know your name miss
sunny’. This is accompanied by a woman in similar clothing (mise en scene black clothes) which could
suggest that it is multi narrative as a music video as it is based about the main singer and the
anonymous woman occasionally featured. This song was an early release of his first album where his
recognition as a music artist would be low, however despite this his newer album/music videos have
been a positive effect from his early work as more support from the audience has gained him
recognition.

Aviva-Grrrls music video.

The main setting is in a suburban street, this does need any cost due to it being a part of a suburban
street (not a public place) which implies that it is a low budget video, this is also reinforced by the
status the artist was in as this, was an early music video at the beginning of her career (not as much
recognition). Tracking shots are often used to follow aviva around her settings this is used as a part
of the chorus, however the lyrics are contradicting to her movement as said 'I'd never sing along’.
even though she is mostly lip syncing to the song with a few two shots to have a slight variety of
camera movement such as not just focusing on her but featuring an unknown person.
