Reflection: Jesus Christ Superstar the Musical

The musical is entitled “Jesus Christ Superstar” which was directed by Des
McAnuff in 2011. This follows the events of Jesus’ life from the beginning of the
preparation of His arrival up to His crucifixion based on Judas’ point of view. There were
significant scenes from the movie that clearly interpreted the life and death of Jesus in
Judas’ perspective. According to the bible it shows Jesus as a human being who also has
emotions like everyone else. This made me feel His pain even more as well as the love
He has for mankind.

A significant scene from the play is the confrontation of Jesus and Judas during
the Last Supper about the betrayal. It was unfortunate for Judas to know that he was
meant to betray Jesus and the fact that he’s future is already planned out for him. Also,
he can’t be able to make his own choice as it was already chosen for him. He witnessed
how Jesus was treated because of what he has done and forever be named as a traitor.
With this, he blamed God for this manipulation and killed himself. This clearly shows
Judas’ interpretation on what had happened during that time in Jesus’ life. It was one of
the main roles of Judas in the life of Jesus which led to His death through crucifixion.

Another scene was when Caiaphas, the High Priest of Israel gathers the priests
and Pharisees wherein he concludes that Jesus is better of dead. Judas was scared to
be seen as a threat to the Romans and that they would suffer the consequences from
following Jesus. I believe that this is a significant part of Jesus’ life as this is where his
pain and sacrifice have started. Based on Judas’ perspective, I think this is where his
doubt and betrayal started as he had fear of getting killed as one of His followers. This
showed Judas’ thoughts during the time when Jesus was announced to face death.

This scene really taught me a lesson when Jesus tells Judas not to judge others
unless he is without any sins. This is in the beginning of the play wherein Jesus was with
Mary Magdalene and that He felt that none of the Apostles truly cared for Him. This shows
the Judas’ perspective as Jesus taught him not to quickly conclude or judge other people
for we have no right as we are all sinners.

These scenes show a clear interpretation of the life of Jesus based on Judas’
perspective. These biblical stories follow a different flow based on the perceptions and
views of the writer on what happened during those times. The musical focused on the
perspective of Judas on how he turned from being Jesus’ follower to His betrayer. This
reminds us that Jesus was also human wherein it showed us how much He has sacrificed
and suffered to save us. Through this, we would always remember to think about our
actions and how it affects other people. This helped me to become closer to Him as I felt
the unbearable pain He went through because of His undying love for us all. As I was
able to learn more about the life of Jesus from different perspectives, it helped me to be
more connected with Him.
