FIRE HOSE
AIM:
To study about Fire hoses – operation and maintenance - uncoiling for use, operation, cleaning with FW
after use, draining and recoiling and stowing on drum.
DESCRIPTION:
1. These are made from synthetic woven textiles, lined with rubber and PVC coated. They are strong and
are not affected by oil, chemicals, extreme climates and mildew.
2. Flax and cotton type usually rot under damp storage conditions by microbes and fungi attack.
3. They are generally 18m long and 64mm diameter and provided with coupling and nozzle.
4. They are kept at designated positions near the hydrant either rolled or flaked in a fire hose box.
15m for machinery space
20m for other spaces and open deck.
25m open deck with max breath in excess of 30m.
One hose for 30m length of ship should be provided in cargo ships and in any case it should be
more than 5 in ships of 1000 GRT and above. There should be one spare hose with coupling
available on board.
5. Hose must be capable of safe operation at the pressure required without the fear of bursting, breaking or
leaking.
6. They should pass around corners and bents without any kinking that will reduce or stop the flow of
water.
7. Testing annually at 50% above working pressure, damage and suspect hose must be renewed.
8. Working pressure 17 bar and testing pressure 24 bar.
9. They should be of light weight so as to allow easy stowage and handling the hose.
COILING AND UN-COILING
The hose should be rolled and kept either as ROLL or DUTCH ROLL.
ROLL METHOD:
Hose is laid flat on the surface and a start is made at the female coupling end. The hose is rolled around the
coupling until male coupling. For running out or to uncoil the hose , we grasp the two lugs of female coupling
with both hands and rotates as it runs out.
DUTCH ROLL METHOD:
The hose is laid out flat on deck and the female coupling is drawn back along the hose towards the other end so
that female coupling lies on top of the hose and about 1m short of male coupling. The hose is then rolled up
from the bight so that the couplings come together on the outside the roll. To run out this roll, both couplings
are held and roll is given a push when it will roll out and uncoil itself leaving a long loop of hose.

CLEANING AND DRYING OF HOSE
After the hose is used for firefighting with sea water, the hose is flushed with fresh water thoroughly and then it
is drained by lifting the hose above the head from one end to another end. Then it is allowed to dry in sun before
being rolled and restored in hose box.
RESULT:
Thus Fire hoses – operation and maintenance - uncoiling for use, operation, cleaning with FW after use,
draining and recoiling and stowing on drum is studied
