Understanding Coding in Qualitative Analysis

Coding is the process of labeling and organizing qualitative data to identify themes. When coding, labels are assigned to words or phrases that represent important themes. These labels can be words or short phrases. Coding qualitative research finds common themes and concepts as part of thematic analysis, which analyzes word and sentence structure to extract themes from text. Qualitative data analysis examines and interprets non-numerical, unstructured data like reviews or interviews to understand what it represents. Thematic coding specifically finds themes in text by analyzing the meaning of words and sentence structures. Color coding text allows interesting passages to be highlighted when initially reading data, before deciding on codes or analyzing in categories. What is coding?

Coding is the process of labeling and organizing your qualitative data to identify different themes
and the relationships between them.
When coding, you assign labels to words or phrases that represent important (and recurring)
themes in each response. These labels can be words, phrases, or numbers; it is recommended to
use words or short phrases, since they’re easier to remember, skim, and organize.
Coding qualitative research to find common themes and concepts is part of thematic analysis,
which is part of qualitative data analysis. Thematic analysis extracts themes from text by
analyzing the word and sentence structure.

What is qualitative data analysis?

Qualitative data analysis is the process of examining and interpreting qualitative data to
understand what it represents.
Qualitative data is defined as any non-numerical and unstructured data, qualitative data usually
refers to any verbatim or text-based feedback such as reviews, open-ended responses in surveys,
complaints, chat messages, customer interviews, case notes or social media posts

What is thematic coding?

Thematic coding, also called thematic analysis, is a type of qualitative data analysis that finds
themes in text by analyzing the meaning of words and sentence structure.

What is Color Coding (Highlighting)?

Color coding text is a technique that is especially useful at the beginning of the analysis process.
It is similar to the marking of text in a book with a highlighter. It allows you to color code the
passages you find particularly interesting when reading through the text for the first time. Before
you decide which codes to use and before you start analyzing your text in categories, this
technique lets you keep track of what seems important.
In practice, then, color coding does much more than just change the color of the text – it is also a
coding action. This means that you can later compile of the green-coded segments and work with
those that are most important. This lets you code more specifically once this initial general
coding run is complete.
