LDM 2 Course Overview for Teachers

This document provides an overview of a teacher training course on distance learning modalities (LDM). It discusses organizing into learning action cells (LACs) to support collaboration. The course combines self-study modules with group collaboration to help teachers deliver quality instruction through new normal distance formats. It offers two support mechanisms: LDM 1 focuses on implementation for administrators, while LDM 2 (this course) focuses on instructional implications for teachers. Teachers are asked to reflect on how the course may positively or negatively impact them and how to address potential obstacles to completion.

ACTIVITY 1

Begin by refreshing your memory on the Learning Action Cell. Read DepEd Order No.
35 s. 2016 titled “The Learning Action Cell as the K to 12 Basic Education Program
School-Based Continuing Professional Development Strategy for the Improvement of
Teaching and Learning.”

Once you’re done, answer the following questions. Write your responses and any other
ideas and reflections in your Study Notebook.

1. Reflect on the objectives for conducting LAC sessions as listed in DO 35, s. 2016.
Rank the following objectives from easiest to the most difficult to achieve:

Answer: (Write 1-4)

____2 To improve the teaching-learning process to improve learning among
students
____3 To nurture successful teachers
__ _1 To enable teachers to support each other to continuously improve their
content and pedagogical knowledge, practice, skills, and attitudes
_ 4 To foster a professional collaborative spirit among School Heads, teachers,
and the community as a whole.

2. What are the top three challenges of having a successful LAC? List down and
elaborate.

3. Identification of Appropriate Strategy for Intervention

ACTIVITY 2

According to DO 35, s. 2016, a LAC should have no less than 2 but not more than 15
members each. Get in touch with your designated Coach or LAC Leader in forming
your LACs.

1. Agree on a date and time to meet and discuss forming your LACs. Follow LAC
Session 1 Guide for the conduct of your LAC.
2. During this meeting, decide on your groupings and designate one LAC
Facilitator and one LAC Leader per LAC.
3. Note the following in forming your LACs:
 LACs should be composed of teachers. Discuss your preferred LAC
composition with your assigned Instructional Coach (this will be a
district or division supervisor assigned to your LAC).
 After forming your respective LACs, there should a LAC Leader
assigned to you from among the following school members:
»» Master Teacher
»» Head Teacher/Department Head
»» Other senior teachers who have proven competence,
potential to lead, or subject expertise to lead the LAC.
 Teacher LACs can connect with their Instructional Coach through
the LAC Leader. This Instructional Coach will also be handling
multiple LACs through a network LAC Leaders.

See Figure 1 for reference.

I clearly realize that I must continue this practice of finding, sharing, and using
information about differentiation.  It will provide a view of the place and importance of
differentiation in student learning.   My strategies will be, therefore, to take time, first
for browsing, and secondly for reflection.  The purpose of my reflection will be to
observe students as they actively work in various small groups, view the assessments,
and conclude if standards have been met for all.  I understand that this is a very large
task but after many years in education, the idea of active, interested and learning
students is very appealing.

The second point I would like to make is that although differentiation is a positive,
logical method for bringing students to joyful, participatory learning, the whole
concept could be doomed to failure without a classroom management plan and anchor
activities.   Teachers could labor long and hard designing tiered lessons only to have
their efforts fail because students were not able to participate independently. This is
another foundational issue; a getting started issue.  As an elementary teacher for
many years, I have had classes for all students from kindergarten to grade 5.  It is
always clear which teachers have procedures and practices in place for student
behavior and which teachers don’t seem to have a clue.

My strategy for providing differentiated lessons will be to start with a clear
management plan.  I understand that my first plan will need to be flexible and may
change with practice, but I will have a starting point.
A power point presentation that we viewed, Getting Started in the Differentiated
Classroom, offered many suggestions for ways to differentiate as well as management
tips.  A very simply stated method for helping students to keep active in their learning
without stopping constantly to ask a question is called ‘RICE’.   Basically the letters
stand for recall, imagine directions, check with classmate, and ask student expert of
the day.  Students will need to be taught and to practice this and other management
supports.
Finally, I would have a series of anchor activities available so that students could
seamlessly move from their project to another activity without shouting the ever
popular, “I’m done, what I do next.”

My two important points seem to work well together although they involve two
different levels of learners—the teacher and the students.  First as the teacher, I would
continuously prepare myself for the many different aspects of differentiation, gaining
ideas and clarity from many sources.  Next for the students, I would help to prepare
them to become independent learners by developing and practicing a management
plan.  Even better, I would hope that classroom teachers will be collaborative in
sharing management plans.
