What I Know: Directions: Read and Analyze The Following Questions. Choose The Letter

Coal is considered a non-renewable energy source because it takes millions of years to form, unlike renewable sources that can be regenerated or replaced. Fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil formed from the remains of dead plants and animals buried underground millions of years ago. They underwent chemical changes due to heat and pressure over long periods of time. If coal reserves run out in the Philippines, it would decrease available energy resources and air pollutants. As a STEM student, we can conduct research on fully utilizing sustainable natural energy sources and developing new technologies to harness renewable resources like wind and solar power to solve energy problems.

What’s New

Directions: List down 5 major mode of transportation in the Philippines

and their energy sources.

Mode of Transportation Source of Energy

E-Bikes Electricity

Airplanes Gasoline or Kerosene

Motorcycles Gasoline

Bicycles Man-powered

Cars Diesel

Guide Questions:

1. Among the 5 modes of transportation, which is the most common?

- Cars, motorcycles, and airplanes are the prominent modes

of transportation used by people.

2. What is the common source of energy of the different mode

of transportation?

- Those modes of transportation heavily rely on fossil fuels such

as kerosene, gasoline, and diesel.

3. What do you think is the effect on the mode of transportation if

the source of energy is not available?

- Necessity is the mother of inventions, though we are going to suffer

for some time due to the inconvenience of the absence of the conventional modes
of transportation we are going to adapt and overcome. We can come up with a
more sustainable way of transportation like by using magnetism etc.

4. What do you think will be its impact on our economy?

- Though we have other sources to get our electricity from, our

transportation heavily rely on fossil fuel and renewable sources can’t
charge up big ships and trucks. The Philippines will be stagnant or can
collapse because we only have a few sources of renewable plants and no
nuclear power plants.
What’s More
Direction: Write True if the statement about fossil fuels is correct
and False if otherwise.
TRUE 1. Coal, oil, and natural gas are fossil fuels.
TRUE 2. Fossil fuels are presently the world’s primary energy source.
FALSE 3. Mining is the process of extracting coal, oil, and natural gas
from the ground.
FALSE 4. Lignite is the highest-grade coal.
FALSE 5. Fossil fuels are formed in an oxygen-rich environment.
FALSE 6. Only combustion of oil and natural gas are linked to global
warming, while coal and methane are exceptions.
TRUE 7. Oil is an organic material mostly made from algae.
TRUE 8. Natural gas is produced from sedimentary rock formation by
forcing chemicals, water, and sand down a well under high pressure.
FALSE 9. Anthracite coal has the lowest fixed carbon content compared
to other types of coal.
FALSE 10. Low pressures and temperature facilitate the formation of
fossil fuel.
What I Have Learned
Directions: Complete the storyboard showing how fossil fuels are formed. If
the picture is given, write a short description on the process shown. And
if the description is given, draw or illustrate the stated process.

What I Can Do

Philippines depend primarily on fossil fuel as a main source of energy in

different mode of transportation. Since this source is a nonrenewable, it
means there will be a time that it will perish. As a STEM student, what
can you do or suggest in solving this problem?

Research can aid issues like this and can be used as basis

for actual application of proposed theories and ideas for the

officials to recreate. We can do extensive researches on the

feasibility of completely utilizing our natural sources without

causing any damages or assuring full sustainability. Harnessing

disasters wouldn’t be far-fetched when used with new inventions

proposed by aspiring researchers like me. Machines that can harness

the sheer electrical capabilities of lightning, wind mills

sensitive enough to be able to generate electricity even with the

softest breeze and powerful enough to withstand and harness the

strong winds of typhoons and many more. We can also research on

possible nuclear power plants in generating definite clean energy

and for its safe execution. Creating tech that requires little to

no energy consumption will no remain fictional thanks to research.
