Lesson1: Expressing the Future Simple:

Rule:
In order to to talk about the future we use several ways; each for specific cases:

A. Present Tenses with Future Meaning:

1. Present Simple 2. Present Continuous

We use the present simple to talk about We use the present continuous (to be in the present

Examples: Examples:
-The train leaves at 8 a.m on Saturday. -I am seeing the optician next week.
-The film doesn’t start until 7 p.m. -We aren’t doing anything tomorrow.
-What time is your flight tomorrow? -Are they getting married soon ?
 we often use it with a future time expressions
such as: at + followed by time (ex: at 7 a.m),
tonight, tomorrow, next weekend.. etc.

B.

1. To be going to +stem 2. To be in the present +about to+ stem

We use to be going to + stem to talk about : We use to be about to + stem to talk about
 Future intentions: an imminent event.
Example: Example:
I am going to buy a new car next month. -Can I call you back? I am about to go out.
When we can make predictions based on -Be quiet, the film is about to start.
a present action: 3. To be in the past+ about to+ stem:
Example: We use to be in the past+ about to+ stem
The present action: There are dark clouds when we talk about something in the future
in the sky. that we planned to do but we didn’t do.
The prediction: It is going to rain. Example:
I was about to see Ridge, but he cancelled
the meeting.
C. Will+ Stem:
We use will+ stem when we talk about:
Predictions: Example: Robots will govern the world.
Immediate decisions: Example: I will help you with this homework.

Activities: Complete the following sentences with the right form of the future:

-A: What ………………….... on holidays? (to do). B. I…………………………. on the beach (to lay).
