CERAMIC TILE
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Special Provisions,
apply to this Section.
1.2 REQUIREMENTS AND DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. Ceramic floor tile installed using the full mortar bed method with cementitious grouted
joints at restrooms.
B. Ceramic wall tile at Accessible Toilet Room and Kitchenette

1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Provide material specifications, characteristics, and instructions for using
adhesives and grouts.
B. Samples:
1. Submit three samples of type and color of tile specified, to match existing tiles.
2. Submit three 3-inch long samples of grout in color to match existing.
3. Submit three samples illustrating full range of sealant colors available for Architect’s

selection.
1.6 FIELD SAMPLE
A. Provide field samples of new under provisions of the General Conditions. Prior to
demolition, reserve 4 existing tiles and grout clean and unbroken for comparison.
B. Provide one field sample, 24 inches by 24 inches in size, for each type and color of tile
selected. Construct sample in place with colored grout.
C. Locate where directed by Architect, approval by Architect.
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver packaged materials, and store in original containers with seals unbroken and
labels intact until time of use in accordance with manufacturer's directions.
B. Store materials on palettes or skids off the ground. Protect materials from inclement
weather, and allow air circulation through stacks.
1.8 MAINTENANCE DATA
A. Maintenance data: Include recommended cleaning methods, cleaning materials, stain
removal methods and polishes and waxes.
1.9 EXTRA STOCK
A. Provide one extra carton of type and color of tile used.
1.10 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturing Standards: Provide tile to equal or exceed the standard grade
requirements of ANSI A137.1.
B. Installation Methods: Comply with the Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation
published by TCA and the installation methods specified.
C. Experience:
1. Manufacturer: Company specializing in the manufacture of products specified in this
section with a minimum of three years documented experience in tile manufacture.
2. Installer: Company specializing in ceramic tile installation having not less than five
(5) years satisfactory experience in two comparable tile installation projects. Submit
references with name of contact person and telephone number for the two submitted
projects.
3. Submit qualifications and experience of all lead personnel scheduled for work on this
project. List project manager or foreman's name and experience relative to this
project. All work to be performed by persons whose qualifications have been
submitted.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS - CERAMIC TILE
A. Gladding McBean.
B. Dal-Tile.
C. Substitutions: As approved by Architect.
2.2 CERAMIC TILE MATERIALS
A. Ceramic Floor Tile: 4” x 4” Color to be determined. See drawings for pattern.
1. Approval of samples by Architect.
B. Ceramic Wall Tile: 2’” x 2” Color to be determined. See drawings for pattern.
1. Approval of samples by Architect.
2.3 SETTING MATERIALS
A. ANSI 118.1, dry set mortar.
2.4 GROUT MATERIALS
A. Ceramic Tile Grout: ANSI A118.6; cementitious type; resistant to shrinking: American
Olean Sanded Grout; Custom Building Products, Polyblend Sanded Colored Tile Grout;
or equal.
2.5 GROUT MIX
A. Mix and proportion pre-mix grout materials in accordance with TCA Handbook.
B. Mix and proportion factory premixed bond coats and grout materials in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION
A. Seal substrate surface cracks with filler.
B. Inspect and approve surfaces to be tiled prior to the commencement of the work. Do not
commence work in any area if substrate is not satisfactory.
C. Prior to installing tile, insure surfaces can slope to drain. Fill low spots to prevent
ponding.
D. Insure surfaces are clean and well cured.

E. Do not commence work until surface conditions are within tolerances required for
proper installation; apply latex leveling material where necessary to meet required
tolerance with TCA F113.
F. Mix tiles before installation so that color variations are distributed uniformly throughout
the field of each area. Do not install extremes of color variation adjacent to each other.
3.2 INSTALLATION - GENERAL
A. Install ceramic floor tile over concrete slabs without depressions for mortar beds in
accordance with TCA 113.
B. Do not interrupt tile pattern through openings.
C. Cut and fit tile tight to penetrations. Form corners and bases neatly. Align floor, base
and wall joints.
D. Sound tile after setting, remove and replace hollow sounding units.
E. Apply sealant to junction of tile and dissimilar materials and junction of dissimilar
planes as specified in Section 07910.
F. Prior to final acceptance of the tile work, remove and replace all condemned or damaged
tile and correct joints which exceed tolerances.
3.3 INSTALLATION - TILE
A. Install all tile in accordance with the installation methods listed in the latest edition of
the Tile Council of America (TCA) Handbook.
3.4 PROTECTION
A. Prohibit traffic from floor finish for 48 hours after installation.
B. Protect finished floor from damage with 6-mil polyethylene sheeting until whole project
is ready for acceptance. Polish floor immediately before final inspection.
3.5 CLEAN UP
A. After grouting, sponge and wash tile thoroughly, diagonally across joints. Polish with
clean dry cloths. Do not use acid or acid cleaners to clean glazed tile.
