For my last internship, I went to orthopaedic surgery because i wanted to
increase my efficiency. For 10 weeks, I looked after pre and post-operation
patients. Gradually, week after week, I got one more patient on my watch. At
the end of my internship I took care 10 patients and therefore increased my
performance.

At the beginning of my third year, i went in a cardiologic dept for 10 weeks. I
was lucky because in this institut there were three different cardiologic dept
in the same hospital. I stayed in the first during 4 weeks in an casualty dept

where the patients were monitored by electrocardiogram every time. Then,
I moved to the post-cardiac operation unit for 3 weeks. Finally, I stayed for
3 weeks in the cardiac reeducation department. By this experience, I got full
exposure to cardiac cares.

I worked in a psychiatric department during 5 weeks . It s was a close
psychiatric dept which means that the patients couldn't leave the hospital by
their own. The nursing role in a psychiatric unit is really different than in a
general hospital. Nurses have to example to give some psychosocial support
and some relational support. They do some activities with the patients. That
was my first internship where i followed some patients with the same age as
me. At the beginning of this internship, I faced some difficulties for speaking
with them formally. My nursing tutor advised me to put some distance and to
speak not so friendly with them. To this end, I worked on my communication
skills. At the end of my internship, my referent was happy to note the change in
my attitude and my speech with them. It was a great experience, I learned a lot
about relational care.

Intern in dialysis dept

I stayed during 5 weeks in a dialysis dept. In this dept, the patients had some
kidney issues, their blood needed to be cleaned by a machine because their
kidney couldn't clean it effectively. I learned to prepare the dialysis machine
and to improve my knowledge about chronic kidney diseases (their diet, their
water restrictions...). I followed the same patients panel during 5 weeks long
and i discovered their respective stories because living with this type of chronic
illness is very difficult on a daily basis. I spoke with them about their daily
routine, about their organisation, about their difference and more. This illness
is very restrictive, in the sense that people need to stay during 4 hours thrice a
week, every week, they can't eat and drink what they want ...
During this internship, i had the chance to fully follow one patient who received
a kidney transplant ! He waited for this operation for 4 years ! It was wonderful
to follow his incredible story ! That is one of my favorite internship because i
learned a lot and met incredible people there !

I have already been involved in the same kind of department in another
hospital but it was the same organisation with similar diseases. That was
really interesting for me because i could take some autonomy in my care and
improved my practice. At the end of my internship my nurse referent gave me
the chance to take in charge all the patients in the department.

During 5 weeks, i was an intern in long term care. In this department, these
patients are older and polypathologic. This type of patients can't stay in
nursing home because they need a lot of cares. I discovered several chronic
pathologies like diabetes, respiratory failure, heart failure... I fully took in care 2
patients in their daily cares (medication, washing, clothing ...).

That is only during my second internship that i could discover the hospital
world. This internship confirmed my choice to be a nurse ! I discovered what
was it to work in nursing !
It was a department for older persons after orthopaedic injuries for example :
broken hip, broken femur ... wich have been chirugicaly operated with
new prosthesis. I could follow the coordination between the nurse and the

physiotherapist, the different precautions after surgery, the different risks
associated with... I worked with the nurse assistants during the first two weeks
in order to learn comfort care for helping them with dressing, washing ...

My first internship was in a nursery during 5 weeks. The children had between
6 months and 3 years. There were three different groups according to their
date of birth. I took care of all this groups. They hadn't illness, they were all in
good health but i used this internship for discovering the different steps of their
development, in order to improve my knowledge.
