explanation how to release out the hook from the fish mouth safely.
Then , we began our fishing. We set out to sea early in the morning. Around 4
Event 2 kilometers from the beach, we started to fish. Apparently, no one caught any
big fish. We caught mostly small yellowtail fish. After fishing for nearly four

DINOSAURS
Dinosaurs were a type of lizards. They lived from about 230 million to about 65 million years ago. In
1842, Sir Richard Owen created the word dinosaur. It came from Greek words deinos, meaning “terrible” and
sauros, meaning “lizard”. Dinosaurs lived on earth for about 140 million years.
During the dinosaurian era, the days were short. The sun was not as hot as it is today. On earth there
was only one big continent and one big ocean. The name of the continent was pangea (all lands) and the name
of the ocean was panthallassa (all seas).
There were many kinds of dinosaurs. Some of them were very big and some others were small. Some
dinosaurs ate leaves and some others ate meat. Some dinosaurs could fly.
What happened to dinosaurs? Dinosaurs became extinct because there was a large comet hitting the earth. The
comet caused fire and it killed the trees. Dinosaurs could not eat because there were no trees on earth and
finally they died and became extinct.

UNIT 15 LET’S SPEECH
Hortatory Exposition
Practice 1
Study the following oral presentation (speech) carefully.
Good Morning,
First of all, I would like to thanks to the God for the precious chance. On this occasion,
I would represent my point of view about “Student and Uniform”
Within a few past weeks, there was an interesting topic discussed by many students in
Indonesia that is government plans to abandon the use of school uniform. I think school uniform is a
must. There are some reasons why the school uniform must be implemented at school.
Firstly, school uniform is an identity. As in the army, we can differentiate between army, navy,
air force and police squad just from the uniform they wear. School uniform is too. We can identify
whether she/he is a kindergarten boy, an elementary school girls, a band of junior high school boys or
a group of senior high school girls from their uniform.
Secondly, school uniform gives us such a feeling of togetherness. The students who come from
rich families are nit too different from the students who come from the poor ones. The uniform will
erase the gab between the rich and the poor. So, the learning atmosphere will not be disturbed by
inferiority feeling from the have not students because they can’t wear an expensive outfit.
In the end of speech I would like to emphasize that the government should cancel the plan due
to the social condition of our nations which is in collapse. School uniform is still badly needed to
unify the students at school

Practice 2
Rearrange the following sentences into good and meaningful arguments. Then put in
the text organization of hortatory exposition.
1. I feel that country people, who often have to travel huge distances to the nearest and
who already spend a great deal of money on petrol, should be treated differently to
the people who live in the city.
2. While I realize my leaded car is polluting the air wherever I drive, I feel that when you
travel trough the country, where you only see another car every five to ten minutes,
the problem is not as severe as when traffic is concentrated on city roads.
3. In all the discussion over the removal of lead from petrol (and the atmosphere) there
doesn’t seem to have any mention of the difference driving in the city and in the
country.
4. Country Concern.
5. Those who want to penalize older, leaded petrol vehicles and their owners don’t seem
to appreciate that country there is no public transport to fall back upon and one’s own
vehicle is the way to get about.

There is an eagle nesting on the tree top near my grandparent’s house in Pangandaran. It was
a sea eagle. The color of its feathers is light brown. It has a strong and sharp yellowish beak. Its
claws are very sharp. It hunts for fish in the sea but sometimes it hunts chickens and small birds.
Eagles have many sizes, shapes, and colors, but the sea eagle is easy to recognise because it has a
strong a streamlined, sharp beak and a stream-line body. Its forelimbs (or arms) serve as wings.
This means that they are of little use for anything excepting. It walks on two legs and has a very
flexible neck and strong beak to handle foods, to care for its feathers, and for many other jobs that
non-flying animals do with paws, claws, or hands on their forelimbs

Analytical Text 2
There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculturE. Pesticides which are commonly used may
cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective
way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil
which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger
ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the
ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and
applied carefully so that they don’t affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.
4. Which of the following is not directly affected by pesticides used?
A. Plants
B. Ecology
C. Animals.
D. Environment.
E. Human Beings

Yuliana : So? Where is my book now? Just give it back to me if you don’t use it.
Adrian : Ok, I will bring it tomorrow. See you.
Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other
air pollutants dissolved in it. Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6. Acid rain may have a
pH value as low as 2.8.
Acid rain can severely damage both plant and animal life. Certain lakes, for example, have
lost all fish and plant life because of acid rain.
Acid rain comes from sulphur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulphur dioxide
(SO2 ). Most sulphur leaves factory chimneys as the gaseous sulphur dioxide (SO2 ) and most
nitrogen is also emitted as one of the nitrogen oxides (NO or NO2 ), both of which are gases. The
gases may be dry deposited–absorbed directly by the land, by lakes or by the surface vegetation. If
they are in the atmosphere for any time, the gases will oxidise (gain an oxygen atom) and go into
solution as acids. Sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 ) and the nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3
). The acids usually dissolve in cloud droplets and may travel great distances before being
precipitated as acid rain. Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone and ammonium help promote
the formation of acids in clouds. More ammonium (NH4 ) can be formed when some of the acids
are partially neutralised by airborne ammonia (NH3 ). Acidication increases with the number of
active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by for example, car exhausts
will react in sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone. Although it is invaluable in the
atmosphere, low level ozone causes respiratory problems and also hastens the formation of acid
rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it dissolves and liberates heavy metals and aluminium
(Al). When it is washed into lakes, aluminium irritates the outer surfaces of many fish. As acid rain
falls or drains into the lake the pH of the lake falls. Forests suffer the effect of acid rain through
damage to leaves, through the loss of vital nutrients, and through the increased amounts of toxic
metals liberated by acid, which damage roots and soil micro organisms.

Text 1.
Twister tells the story of tornado chasers trying to test new equipment that will help save
lives. The story of Twister is about Jo Harding (played by Helen Hunt) and her soon-to-ex-
husband Bill (played by Bill Paxton) who goes hunting tornadoes in a race against other twister
chasers. Bill has invented a machine that might help predict tornadoes but he needs to test it.
Along the way there is drama between Jo, Bill and Bill’s new girlfriend and some humorous
moments involving the twister-chasing team. I found the special effect used in the movie to be
excellent and the story easy to follow. This is a movie suitable for the whole family and sure to
blow them away
This film is really worth watching.

Schematic Structure
Activity 5
Read the following review and study the schematic structure of the text.
Orientation Starring:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances
Fisher, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Danny Nucci, Gloria Stewart,
David Warner, Victor Garber, Bill Paxton
Director:
James Cameron
Running Time:

•I absolutely love ‘Titanic’, and all of the movies will always hold
a special place in my heart. Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) is a somewhat
ruthless treasure hunter searching for profit under the sea in the debris
of the wrecked liner Titanic. In particular, he is searching for a
necklace featuring an historic blue diamond that is rumored to have
sunk with the ship. He believes he is on the right track when his crew
retrieves a safe in which he finds a sketch of a beautiful woman
wearing the diamond. The drawing is shown on a TV news program,
and an old lady called Rose Dawson Calvert (Gloria Stewart) comes
forward claiming that she is the woman in the drawing. When
questioned by the treasure hunters, she tells them her story.
Interpretative recount 1 When she joined the Titanic for her maiden voyage Rose DeWitt
Bukater (Kate Winslet), as she was known then, was 17 years old. Her
mother (Frances Fisher) had good breeding but little money, so she was
taking Rose to America to marry rich Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) - a
match that Rose would rather have avoided.
Interpretative recount 1 • Attempting to commit suicide, she was saved by Jack Dawson
(Leonardo DiCaprio), a raffish and charming third-class passenger.
Jack and Rose started to spend time together, ultimately falling in love,
in spite of the disapproval of both her mother and Hockley. Hockley
would have done anything to prevent Jack seeing Rose, and falsely
accused him of theft. However, the historic events that followed were
to change everything.
Evaluation 2 The romantic thread is appealing enough, but its greater purpose is
to make the effect of the tragedy more personal. Kate Winslet and
Leonardo DiCaprio make a fine job of playing the young couple,
although the romance is occasionally rather overdone and DiCaprio
does struggle at times to give his character as written any real depth
