Recent Acquisition
4
We recently received through a donation The Classroom Printer. Copyright
1932 by The Classroom Teacher, Inc. Chicago. This is one of the first mass
produced printing sets for classroom or play. Originally used as a teaching
tool, the two tiered wooden box with partial paper label contains various
word, letter, and picture rubber stamps. The upper tray contains over 100
wooden stamps with pictures, words and letter/numbers/signs. Words can
be spelled with the capital and lower case alpha/numerical/punctuation
stamps. These were also used by kids to print up "LOCAL KIDS NEWS".
ACTUAL PRINT BLOCK TRAY THE TOP FOUR ROWS CONTAIN 46
PICTURE STAMPS ALONE!! Complete sentences can also be created from
the word stamps. Cleverly illustrated images include Abraham Lincoln and
George Washington, an airplane, camel, Santa, ... and many more. (JUST
LIKE TODAY'S HP OR EPSON!!)
The bottom compartment of the set contains a "HECTOGRAPH" and
instructions for use. Hectography, requiring limited technology and leaving
few traces behind, has been deemed useful both in low-technology
environments and in clandestine circumstances where discretion was
5
necessary. In the earlier 20th Century, the process lent itself to small runs of
school classroom test papers, church newsletters and science fiction
fanzines.
